Sept 14th was the debut of MTV's Video Music Awards show. The VMA's were hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler from the Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

Herbie Hancock bested Michael Jackson by taking home five awards to Jackson's three. But that didn't include 'Video of the Year', which went to The Cars-'You Might Think'.
Hancock, along with The Police ('Every Breath You Take') led video nominations with eight each. The most nominated artist of 1984 was Cyndi Lauper, who aside from winning the Best Female Video received nine total nominations that year. Six nominations for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and three for "Time After Time."

MTV pulled from the who's who to get some of the best presenters in the industry. Roger Daltrey presented Best Overall Performance in a Video. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood presented the Special Recognition Award. Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes presented Best Female Video. Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo presented Video of the Year.
Performances on the show include Huey Lewis and the News, David Bowie & ZZ Top. But none were as memorable as Madonna's 'Like A Virgin'. It that 1080p or what?!
