On June 30, 2009, American alternative rock/country band Wilco rather anticlimactically released its 7th studio album.

Wilco: Glenn Kotche, Mikael Jorgensen, Jeff Tweedy, Nels Cline, Pat Sansone, John Stirratt

Wilco is the Jeff Tweedy led band of Uncle Tupelo survivors from Irving Park (Chicago), IL. The band recorded its seventh studio album at the Auckland, NZ Roundhead Studios of Neil Finn (Split Enz/Crowded House). In December 2008, four members of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy, Pat Sansone, Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt, traveled to NZ to participate in Finn's 7 Worlds Collide sequel project, The Sun Came Out, joined by Radiohead’s Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), KT Tunstall, Liam Finn, and Lisa Germano. Wilco enjoyed the vibe so much, they extended their stay into January, and laid down the basic tracks for a new album. Nels Cline and Mikael Jorgensen joined them back at the Wilco Loft studio in Chicago to add their overdubs.

The official release was anticlimactic because Wilco (The Album) was leaked on the internet in April, 2009. The group responded the same day by streaming the album for free on its website and suggesting a charitable contribution to a Chicago organization. The site logged 100,000 hits that day.

The success of the album is evident from its charting: #1 Billboard US Alternative Albums, #2 Billboard US Rock Albums, and #4 Billboard 200 Albums. It was nominated for the Best Alternative Album Grammy.
