The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, Griffon freed the freighter, Arthur M. Anderson from thick ice on Lake Erie. Lake Erie is currently 98% frozen and odds are it will be 100% frozen within a few weeks, for the first time since 1994. The Griffon also escorted the U.S. Coast Guard cutter, Bristol Bay back to Cleveland after it got stuck in the ice. The Arthur M. Anderson still has to make its way back to Sturgeon Bay Canal, in Wisconsin.
Interesting Fact: The Arthur M. Anderson was the last ship in contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald the night it sank. The Anderson was also the first ship on the scene to attempt to rescue any potential Fitzgerald survivors.
