The name has not officially been approved by the league's presidents. The conference also is considering several other names, sources said.
However, Covington & Burling, the conference's law firm, purchased and registered the domain name America12.org on Tuesday, according to WhoIs domain-registration data.
The Big East's law firm also registered other variations of America 12 on Tuesday, including America12Conference.com, America12Sports.com, American12.org, American12conference.com, AmericaTwelve.com and TheAmerica12Conference.com.
The Big East -- the one you know right now as the Big East -- is losing the Big East name to the "Catholic 7", the non-football Catholic universities that will take the name with them when they leave the Big East. This seems to be the name they've settled on.
To clarify (since I had to look it up), this "America 12" conference will include these teams: Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, Southern Methodist, South Florida, Temple, and Tulane. Navy is scheduled to join in 2015 as a football-only member. By my count, that's only 11 teams. Soooo, there's something else in store.
