Assuming Braxton returns, over/under on two losses next year?

I'd like an option for "push," please. Two feels like a reasonable total.

FROMTHE18's picture

agreed. I think we drop to Michigan State. Im not sure who else we would lose to as of right now but that seems like a probable chance of happening. If we had 1 loss, we may push for a playoff spot (unlikely), but could get an unfavorable bowl match up so Ill saw the chancs of a 2nd loss at this point is 60/40 of happening sometime next year. 2 is about right until we see what this team will look like.

JozyMozy's picture

honestly? with this defense? @Navy (in Baltimore, close enough) to kick off the year concerns me just an eensy bit. BRIAN ROLLE AIN'T WALKING THOUGH THAT DOOR
and the Hokies could always surprise us. (The ACC team or TTUN, either or)

Nov 8th - If we win in East Lansing, we shouldn't finish with anymore than one L.

I'll say under. I'm an optimistic Buckeye.

Comparing the teams, I'd expect:
QB: +
OL: -
RB: -
WR: +
DL: +
LB: ? (We will miss Shazier, but may end up with a stronger unit overall as we finally have depth)
DB: +
We should have either more talent (WR) or more experience with great talent (DL) everywhere but OL. Carlos won't be easily replaced, but his replacements are all competent. I feel like our defense almost has to get better as we finally (hopefully) fix our LB depth issue.
I think Braxton's sophomore season is an absolute worst case for offense... I expect us to be much better than that even with the o-line graduating. If the defense can improve at all (and they were breaking in how many new starters last year, and had their top two DB's injured?) 2-wins seems like a worst case season.

Rod smith is going to shock a lot of people next season.

The schedule is very forgiving again IMO. VA Tech isn't what they used to be (which sucks actually) and the other OCC games aren't too bad.  Cincy could be a surprise game but I think OSU wins.  Now, the conference.  WOW...is all I can say.  It won't be a challenge yet again. MSU at East Lansing and TTUN at home (if they're good) is about it folks (no Wiscy or NEB which also sucks).  I really hope MSU is a tough game because OSU needs them to get prepared.  To me, that's what was OSU's demise this year...we didn't play anybody.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Aug. 30 - vs. Navy (at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium) (Win - Comfortable)
Sept. 6 - Off
Sept. 13 - Kent State (Win - Blow Out)
Sept. 20 - Virginia Tech (Win - Close/Tough)
Sept. 27 - Cincinnati (Win - Comfortable)
Oct. 4 - at Maryland (Win - Close/Tough)
Oct. 11 - Off
Oct. 18 - Rutgers (Win - Comfortable)
Oct. 25 - at Penn State (Win - Close/Tough)
Nov. 1 - Illinois (Win - Comfortable)
Nov. 8 - at Michigan State (Toss Up)
Nov. 15 - at Minnesota (Win - Close/Tough)
Nov. 22 - Indiana (Win - Comfortable)
Nov. 29 - Michigan (Toss Up)
Dec. 6 - Big Ten Championship Game (Result of MSU Game)
The season will come down to the MSU game on November 8th.  If we can win that I think we'll get the B1G championship bid and the Rose Bowl; or better.  We'll be favored in every game like last season.  The nice thing is that with Virginia Tech and MSU on the schedule early we'll have some quality opponents.

Rivalry game.  And we surrendered 41 to a terrible offense.  26-21 and 42-41 over some average to medicore Michigan teams does not instill confidence.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Ohio State only beat a 5-7 M*chigan team by 11 in '09.

Given how bad Hoke is on the road, I don't see it being a toss up.

I always take TTUN seriously no matter how crappy they are.

Seriously? scum a tossup? The toss part is right, tossed right out of the shoe on their asses.

BuckI_1033's picture

I know at MSU won't be an easy game but do we really think they'll repeat the success of the previous season. It happens a lot in college football teams take huge leaps, then take steps back. Not saying they'll be a bad team but I do think 9-3 8-4 is not insane to think.

Bucksfan's picture

Unless this team makes substantial strides, I think the Buckeyes lose twice (at Michigan State, and either Michigan or Virginia Tech), but I took the under for no real reason.  It all depends on who regresses.  Michigan may make a leap forward, and MSU might fall off a bit....or maybe not.  In any case, with a coaching staff that will see some turnover, and with a lot of turnover on both sides of the football (including a gutted offensive line), I don't know how it magically gets better to knock off some of the stronger teams.  The defense has been on steady decline for a couple of seasons.  The current coaches seem clueless on how to fix it.
It's going to take something special, and hopefully some real leadership (8 captains?  Really?).  At least we have top-tier ACC and AAC teams (VaTech, Cincy) on the schedule early to see what the team can do.

Hovenaut's picture

Since we've averaged one loss a year the past couple, I'm taking the under.

I am not the Last Dragon, therefore I do not possess the power of the Glow.

If Braxton returns, over.  If he leaves under, there are better passers and QB's on bench right now than Braxton.  He's no QB, he's an athlete that has had 3 years to get the mental aspect and still can't grasp it at all.

BrewstersMillions's picture

Like who? Who is a better passer and why?
You mean to tell me they will lose more than 2 games if they have an explosive senior capable of changing the game with his feet but will lose less than 2 if they have an inexperienced signal caller who  hasn't seen the field? Barrett and Collier would be getting their first taste of football while Cardale has only seen mop up duty.
Has Braxton fallen this far out of favor now that people are saying OSU is better without him?

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

idotter81's picture

I, too, find this attitude nothing but amazing.  Barrett and Collier haven't thrown a college pass, Barrett is coming off a major knee injury and Cardale is not (IMHO) the future of the team at QB.  Braxton has plenty to improve on but there is no one who will even come close to what he can do next year if he returns.  Man, oh man, the haters are out in full force.  I don't get it.

buckeye4life050233's picture

Anyone who can put a little touch on the ball and not have to throw 95mph fastballs everytime can execute screens way better than braxton and would allow herman to do what the really wants to do in this offense....but the real implication will be on what we see happen defensively from now till next year.... privately behind closed doors UFM has to be going nuts to Gene Smith about needed a better DC and why in the world Smith made him keep Fickell on the staff.  It will all come down to defense.  Otherwise it will be the same type of team next year

Wesleyburgess1's picture

I think we are going to have a top 10 defense next year. We have all the players we need now that there redshirt years are out of the way. Allot of young but also very talented guys. Our offense will probably see some drop off but with EZE and Dontre in the weight room and practicing with the ones, we have no problems. Add in the mass of young talented wr's...National Championship or bust.

Gametime's picture

I'm sure he's basing that solely on the tape, but honestly, both Cardale and J.T. appear to be better passers than Braxton; hell we could say many people felt like Kenny G was a better passer than Braxton.
Braxton just happens to be a better athlete.

...I too dream in color and in rhyme
So I guess I'm one of a kind in a full house
Cause whenever I open my heart, my soul or my mouth
A touch of God rains out...

BrewstersMillions's picture

What tape? All you did was name the other two QB's on the depth chart. It is assumed they are better because they aren't Braxton.
I'll concede on Kenny. Game film showed how accurately he threw SOME passes but Kenny severely under threw a lot as well. Anything over 20 was floated and had to be come back to.
If anyone proposes that the Buckeyes are in better hands than Miller's next season, I ask that you simply say it out loud to yourself a few times before actually putting in on 11W.
As the site's self proclaimed president of the Terrelle Pryor fan club, I can honestly say the venom thrown at Miller is approaching Pryoresque proportions.
Cardale Jones and JT Barrett have thrown a combined 2 passes against NCAA competition, with Barrett adding 0 to that number. If that is enough to warrant a change, then shame on me.
ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR People can come out and say what they really feel and quit masking it behind bullshit. "I don't like Braxton Miller so he isn't a good player". It was the same for Pryor, its getting that way with Braxton.

OfficerRabbit's picture

I'm personally happy he is coming back, as replacing 80% of our O-line and our best RB of the last 10 years is going to be hard enough. However, I can understand to some extent the dissatisfaction with Braxton, and I don't think it has to do with liking or not liking him.

My .02, people are frustrated with his development, or lack thereof. It was thrilling three years ago thinking about what he would become with some experience and development. After a 3rd season in which he regressed toward the end, people are becoming frustrated with the development of this offense with him in control. Like it or not, he still misses easy throws, lacks "touch" sometimes, and often cant get past his 1st or 2nd read, missing guys that are open in other parts of the field.

But like I said above, anyone calling for him to be benched in favor of CJ or JB is off there rocker.

Call me a homer, but I honestly believe what Im about to type
Aug. 30 - vs. Navy =  Win by 14-20 (would be a lot higher if it was in the middle of the year, but 1st game jitters)
Sept. 13 - Kent State = Win by 35+
Sept. 20 - Virginia Tech = Win by 14-17 (VT is losing a lot of players and it's a home game)
Sept. 27 - Cincinnati = Win by 10-14 (The classic "we should have beat this team by more points" game)
Oct. 4 - at Maryland = Win by 21
Oct. 11 - Off
Oct. 18 - Rutgers = Win by 25-30
Oct. 25 - at Penn State = Win by 14-28
Nov. 1 - Illinois = Win by 35+
Nov. 8 - at Michigan State = Win by 3-7
Nov. 15 - at Minnesota = Win by 7-10 (I think Minneota will be really good next year, and a 7-10 point vicotry won't be bad)
Nov. 22 - Indiana = Win by 35+
Nov. 29 - Michigan = Win by 1-20 points
Dec. 6 - Big Ten Championship Game Wisconsin = Win by 5 points

DITTO!!!!! TOSU will go undefeated with Braxton. Without, Braxton, i see 3 to 4 losses.

idotter81's picture

It is certainly possible.  November is going to be a lot tougher than it has been, I think.  At East Lansing will be a big challenge and I also agree that at Minnesota will be a much tougher task than in the past.  I think Indiana could be better if they start to improve on defense and TTUN is always a toss up regardless although being at home will help some.  I don't disagree with the rest of your projections although Va Tech and Cincy games have potential as trap games for a young team (although again I think we take care of business especially at home).

irishfury's picture

I see 0 or 1 loss.  I really think that this defense is going to be alot better next year.  One thing about Urban is he makes changes when needed.  I have a feeling Urban won't like the taste in his mouth from the two losses in a row and will focus on getting the D fixed.  I also think it was a mistake to let some of the guys redshirt.  I think Urban was a little to loyal to the older guys on the team instead of going with his players.
I mean look at Vonn Bells real first action.  We as fans been calling for him the whole season.

I think Mike Mitchell, McMillan, Eli Apple, Cam Burrows, Vonn Bell and some of the other young talent will go a long way to secure this D.  If we had even an average D this year we would have been in the Nation Championship.  We lost 2 games by a total of 15 points.
Next year we have to get some playmakers involved.  We have so much talent not on the field and as much as I hate to say it we handicapped ourselves doing the Braxton and Hyde show not that it wasn't a good show but we have so many 4-5 star recruits that our playmakers.  We need to get creative and get them to the ball.
We get some of the playmakers involved.  And get the D to even average and this team is ready.

thorvath22's picture

The rose glasses are out in full force I see.

I at two losses but it won't be an easy season next year and it won't be a big ten championship season either. Losing Hyde is big and losing Shazier and Roby are bigger. The defense will get better as the season goes, I suspect we lose to Navy or Va Tech and MSU.

OSU069's picture

I see no losses with braxton until the final four playoff where we may lose.

Mute's picture

Until I see actual improvement from the defense I don't see OSU going 12-0 again regardless of Braxton

Reading these comments is depressing.  Look ohio state could easily be unbeaten this year.  Losing bryant hurt us this year.  Still if brown fair catches that punt are you down on your buckeyes right now?  I say hell No!

Buckeye_in_SEC_country's picture

I would've liked a "push" option, but I don't think it's up to Braxton.  I think our success next year is based on the defense.  Can we improve from this year will be the question.
