ONE Not Done!

Four years from 2004-2007. OSU 4-0 vs scUM.

rkylet83's picture

I'd rather hear about people doing it, than actually doing it!  Too damn cold out!

albinomosquito's picture

In my drunken college years, I might have made the trip from Dayton to Columbus to do it.  Now in my thirties, definitely not.

PG_BUCK's picture

I jumped all 5 years (OSU 5-0 vs. SCUM) I was there and then some. Loved doing it, even my freshman year when it was in the teen's with ice on the lake....coldest I have ever been in my life.

Columbus to Pasadena: 35 hours.  We're on a road trip through the desert looking for strippers and cocaine... and Rose Bowl wins!

One of the greatest traditions on a college campus. Jumped 3 times from 2010-2012 and plan on making it a 4th time tonight!

And let's not forget that impromptu jump when Osama Bin Laden was killed...

TIL that OSU responded to the death of Bin Laden with a Mirror Lake jump.
That sounds like some sort of trivia question in later years.

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

Stinson's picture

Well, it wasn't necessarily an "OSU" response. But there were maybe 100-200 students that jumped.

My sophomore back in 2004. It was 27 degree outside. I was drunk. It was awesome. I'm pretty sure I was molested at some point.

Awesome. Your roomy there looks like he wasn't partaking.

I re_e_ber _y first _irror lake ju_p. I had enough whiskey in _e to subdue a s_all giraffe. But I trudged _y way through the cold and _ud to baptize _yself in the glorious waters of _irror Lake.

Jumping in Mirror Lake year after year gave me some of my best memories (the parts I remember) from my college days!

It was cold and nasty and I about got flipped over one of those metal benches. Didn't do it again.

2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. From 2003 on, I did it in jorts, an elastic-strapped bow tie, and a top hat.

Jorts for their wonderful-water-wicking properties obviously.

Denny's picture

Hadn't learned about Otter Wax at that point or I would have better-prepared myself by waxing my jorts oh jeez I just re-read this sentence

Be careful young man.  Waxing your jorts leads to all kinds of maladies including but not limited to : jort warts, joiters, jortvenile diabetes, jortitis, and jorticular cancer.

Not gonna lie, buddy: 'joiters' made me laugh out loud.

I ju_ped in _irror Lake.  It was a_azing.  I was drunk and stoned at the sa_e ti_e.  It was cold but totally worth it.  I only did it _y final year (2009), though, because there was a ti_e when I thought "Ju_ping in a nasty lake in the _iddle of Nove_ber when it's like 30 degrees - wow that sounds pretty stupid."

Class of 2010.

BuddhaBuck's picture

National Championship year, 2002. Drunkenly sprinted a 1/2 mile from E. 14th Ave and dove straight in, swam to the middle of the lake (was there a fountain?) and sprinted a 1/2 mile back home. I was sick for 2 weeks thereafter but it was totally worth it.

Don't text while driving.

2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The sandals I duct-taped to my feet every year were purposely blue and yellow so I could step on those colors throughout the night.

I did it my fresh_an year (2007, it was snowing) stone cold sober.  I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it, it was an experience.  I was quite cold, didn't stay in very long.

Having to deal with the kiddos as an RA for the next 3 years on _irror lake night was, however, decisively unenjoyable lol

DJ Byrnes's picture

I drove 30 hours straight from Missoula, Montana in 2007. Got lost at 7 AM in Chicago. Blew my water-pump on 315 and then dodged a car over-correcting into the guard-rail and flipping over. Got to OSUMASTRO's apartment, ate Chipotle, got my car towed, got drunk and jumped in Mirror Lake and raged the whole weekend.

It was a glorious time to be alive, to be sure. Mirror Lake is the best.

30 hours straight to Columbus is flat hauling ass, DJ. Especially considering your pump troubles.

I was thinking about doing that on the "official" (i.e. OSU-sanctioned/sanitized) date/ti_e of the event. Reading about last night's ju_p _ade _e feel better than actually doing it - the water out here is 60 degrees. War_er than _irror lake, for sure, but so_ewhat relieved.

I just loved the vibe and the group i went with.  We def saved a few of us from hypothermia those nights and it would be nice if they could turn mirror lake back into a spring or find a better way to keep it moderately clean (by comparison).  The water is probably nowhere near as gross or bacteria filled as the bathrooms some of the jumpers live with every day anyway.

dumpus's picture

did it before the 02 game.  it was f'n miserable.  probably like 10* out.  this was pre-renovation, so generally when you landed, you either went thud into the mud, or you land on something and destroy your ankle/knee.  which i saw.  had to pull out some poor freshman girl who tore her acl or some shit because the water where she jumped was barely a foot deep.  oh, and i think i stepped on a sunken corpse or something too. overall, it was fun to do once, but i file that on the "i'm too old for that shit now" shelf.

I ju*ped each year back during *y undergrad 2008,2009,2010,2011, wore the same $1 flip-flops I got at Old Navy a few hours before the 2008 j*mp each year. *y fresh*an year the cops/firefighters had to break the ice on the lake before we could ju*p. Yeah it was between below freezing and 5 degrees if I re*e*ber. My favorite tradition that I did right before Christ*as break. Love how the students have co*e together.10tv mentioned that since 1990 when the ju*p started no one has died. Every year that I ju*ped the cops were always laughing and willing to take pictures with us. They cared for our safe but enjoyed seeing the passion and love we as students had for what this week represents. I keep editing *y post because I keep forgetting funny *e*ories of that night. Fresh*an year *y floor Park Hall floor 6, turned the hallway into a giant slip-n-slide. Yeah it didn't last long but still re*e*ber the soap suds and water and kids flying by *y door. Oh *irror Lake Night for you I a* eternally greatful of so*e of *y best *e*ories of college
Fro* *y first plunge back in 2008.

I was on Park 3 for my freshman year (2006) and the same thing happened to my floor.  Kids just took the garbage cans into the showers and dumped them into the hallway for a giant slip and slid.  The hall director was pissed.
Also, some kid came wondering in with a case of beer right before we were about go out and jump.  The hall director saw him and yelled at him that he couldn't be in there with beer.  He just looked at her and did the Heisman pose with the beer and sprinted out.
Needless to say it was a good night.

No.  I went to school in the early to mid 90s.  My 6 years I believe included getting Heiesmaned by Desmond, Gee's "greatest victory in Ohio State History, getting beat while being undefeated favorites in 1993 (10-0-1), and 1995-96 (both 11-0). Quite a run. Scarred me for life, and makes me enjoy the times now, but makes me leery. We've beaten them the last 3 times we were undefeated, so every time makes it a little better.

Way back in the dark ages, we didn't do the Mirror Lake Jump-it hadn't been invented yet-what a cesspool it was back then, but i probably would have gone to join the fun and dip a toe in. From what I understand, Mirror Lake is not quite as ewwwwwy these days, and gets cleaned out so that it isn't tetanus central. OSU Daughter jumped and of course I was begging her to shove neosporin up her nose and on her lips, not to go more than knee deep, not to "jump" but rather hop/wade in, make sure that a non-jumping friend had a dry towel/blanket for her as soon as she got out, blah blah blah... oh how different it is when you are the parent of a jumper as opposed to the jumper haha.

Did the ju_p for both _y fresh_an and sopho_ore years at OSU (07 and 08). Was cold as s*** both ti_es, but it was a hell of a lot of fun.
