Anonymous B1G Coach on Ohio State: "Talented, Talented Team"

By DJ Byrnes on August 5, 2014 at 4:30p

Jalin Marshall at yesterday's practice.

Pieces in which grown men are given autonomy to slander other grown men are my favorite type of pieces. It's a bunch of dudes chopping it up about the deficiencies of other dudes.

In other words, it's kinda like high school.

Athlon Sports got a hold of some anonymous "Big Ten coaches," and while they're not slanderous against Ohio State, they're not exactly ready to crown the Buckeyes either.

Some of the most interesting quotes:

“Talented, talented team. If you can match up with them on the offensive and defensive lines, you can give them a good fight. For us it wasn’t like, ‘Oh no, you have to play OSU again.’ They can overwhelm people sometimes, though."

Teams have a chance when they can match up on the offensive and defensive lines? That's B1G, if true.

“If you can get your play-action passes going, you can make some big plays against them. They were a little bit suspect in the defensive backfield.”

Hello, Iowa.

“I have a lot of respect for the running back Carlos Hyde, he’s was a really good player. They’ll miss him a bunch.”

Who among us won't miss El Guapo (peace be upon him)? But I think most will be surprised about the status of Ohio State's stable of diamond-toters.

Tell me, Athlon Sports, what does the anonymous sea of haters have to say about Michigan?

“What are they going to do new offensively? They just hired Doug Nussmeier. Where they’ve struggled, they haven’t been what they thought they’d be on the offensive line. They lost both their tackles now.”…

My only question: Why did Athlon cut him off just when the story was getting good?

Not sure how Michigan's OL can be any worse than it was last year, but then again, you never know. Suppose the same could be said about our defensive backfield.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

No, I agree, Michigan's OL can't get much worse than last season, but how much better can it get?

Their biggest problem last season was that they were atrocious at running between the tackles. The Nussmeier offense is predicated on inside power RB plays out of pro-style. Supposedly, Michigan is also trying a "less is more" approach under Nussmeier and their kids are excited about it, blah, blah. They have a bit more experience on the interior line. So, we should expect some improvements.

Then again, they don't have Alabama's personnel. These days, it almost seems like an offense has to have loads of horses to run a pro-style power attack effectively. I can Michigan pounding some square nails into round holes this season.

ToetotheFace's picture

I don't know if they have the offensive line and RB talent for it to be successful, look at Wisky who runs one of the best pro style power run attacks every year despite not getting the best talent overall. The reason they're so consistently successful there is they always have a huge powerful offensive line and 1 or more elite RBs. Seeing what Gardner does this season should be interesting though, I don't think they can possibly be as bad as they were last year offensively in many ways, so I think some improvement will happen.

+2 HS
Run_Fido_Run's picture

That's an excellent point. Wisconsin's QBs, WRs, and TEs have been underrated and occasionally elite talents (e.g., Russell Wilson), but yeah . . . Their game begins with overwhelming power. Whereas Alabama has offenses with pro players at most positions. Those are the two ways to run a successful pro offense now. But mediocre pro offenses in the college game these days seem to get completely shut down by competent defenses.

Apparently Nuss is implementing... wait for it... a similar type of O-line scheme as 'bama/us... ie, Inside Zone, Outside Zone and Power... The fear is that it takes time to learn new concepts and rep them to be effective, and their O-line is suspect until they can prove otherwise this season...

Indeed shouldnt be much worse!!

It seems like there was something 'wrong' as they had two OL drafted... I would wager the new OC has a positive impact on their running game at the very least... their running game last year was a disaster.... somewhat a Kin to what Ash will bring to the DB position, scheme had a lot to do with TTUN's lack of success.... but should have their hands full with a DL like OSU will put on the field...

Peppers can't help them on OL!! :-P

Can't say I disagreed with anything I read.  Although I was confused as to the point.  Were they commenting on last year or what they think this year will be like?  They talk of Hyde and Brown and how they will be missed for this year, but they also talk about how our defense can be beat.  And they were spot on for last year.

Not sure that translates to this year though. Although I fully expect teams to try some of the same things to see if we've fixed them.

This article could have been written off of quotes from random drunks at closing time on High St. Match them on the lines and you can maybe compete, and they didn't do well in the secondary last year. Mind blowing stuff here.

I knew it was Iowa's coach as soon as i read "play-action passes". They were pretty sucessful with it last season. Hopefully, Ash has fixed all that up.

I don't feel like I was fed enough. I want to see more angst and vitriol. As Buckeyes, we've come to embrace the hate. They were anonymous so why not just let it air out?

DJ did not include my favorite quote from the article:

We knew we had em beat, and if not for that meddling Tyvis Powell kid, we would have!

Powell had a lot of good plays last year, so I'm not quite sure which B1G coach said that...

But the trail of donut crumbs leading away from the studio does help narrow the field...

Yeah....when Fick was Heacock's co-DC, they put 6 seasons together where we called the Buckeye defense, the "Silver Bullets". Now, we keep having Meyer giving a different defensive coach the title of ASSISTANT HEAD COACH. If the offense wasn't moving the ball, you wouldn't be yelling at Herman (if you were smart...the Buckeye offense belongs to Meyer 100%), would you? This new Buckeye defense now has Larry Johnson as the assistant head coach and has both Fickell and Ash written in as co-DC's.

Who do you think will call the plays? Will they be up in the box or down on the field? How is this going to work, exactly?

You have to stop calling Fickell our defensive coordinator. He has never had that title or been paid like one.

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

Jalin Marshall is big. All the talk since Meyer arrived about different people in the 'Percy Harvin' role has always been just that… talk. The reason, in my opinion, has been that the players we've always hoped would 'play' Harvin have never been as thick and strong as Percy Harvin. Marshall, though, appears to have really put in his time in the weight room and with his diet. Wow, he looks like a beast.

B1G coaches are so damn boring. I was hoping for some real crap talking but 90% of it is like "Those guys are just great. They play so hard and I want to buy their whole team ice cream cones and tell them how much I love them. Let's all hold hands and skip off to unicorn forest and sing show tunes."

What we need is some Hatin' Ass Spurrier in this conference.

You know, maybe you're right Angry. Maybe that's the problem with the B1G: most of the coaches are too polite. It is quite a contrast from the Spurrier comments yesterday, isn't it?

Has the B1G gotten better with Urban? Yes

Will it get better with Franklin? Yes IMO

Why? They hold nothing back, players know where they stand and the fanbases generally dont appreciate BS "coach speak" this isn't 1995 anymore, get with the times B1G.

I hope the defense has addressed covering screen passes (watching the game with TTUN last year). And I hope they covered play action passes. But with man to man press coverage delaying the WR's while having the best D-line in the country rush into the backfield sounds like opposing teams won't have much time to work the play action.

Last years team defied science with the screen pass. Can't defend it and can't run it. I feel like every screen pass in practice ended up with both sides of the ball running sprints.

I didn't see any negatives there that were not called for.  We were suspect on pass D last year.  The problem everyone had was matching up with the offensive and defensive lines.

We will miss Carlos, but less than most expect.  Zeke is much quicker, and he is not a little guy.  Braxton should be better and he has more targets to look for.  Defensively, I expect to see the return of the silver bullets.

My biggest worry game is  at Minnesota. Going up there the week after Michigan State could be a trap game.  Kill will have his team prepared, and we will be coming down off a "HIGH" for the MSU game.

I am a little concerned about the Cincy game, they always seem to play us tough!! I hope we destroy Sparty and Penn State!! I think Minnesota will be good this year, but it is hard for me to imagine that they will be able to give us a game!! I am a little concerned about Virginia tech and Navy!! Of course the game against scum,is always the biggest game of the year, besides the bowl game!!
