Buckeyes Check in at No. 4 for Torrance Gibson

Torrance Gibson has announced his top-15 list and Ohio State currently sits fourth - behind Tennessee, Auburn and LSU. After being named one of his top-three schools just recently, dropping to fourth is somewhat of a surprise.

While LSU at No. 3 is surprising, the Buckeyes being behind Tennessee and Auburn is not. In fact, Ohio State is in pretty good shape considering Gibson has not yet been to Columbus.  In fact, the Buckeyes are the highest on his list among those that have not yet been visited, which is good news. Gibson is expected to visit Ohio State at some point this summer and likely again in the fall, so the Buckeyes have plenty of time and opportunities to surpass the three schools ahead of them. Additionally, positioning themselves well with the likes of Damien Harris, Christian Kirk and Chris Clark will only help Ohio State moving forward.

Yes, it is disappointing that Ohio State isn't higher on his list but they remain one of the schools to beat for him and will still have an excellent shot of landing him when it's all said and done.

I think Gibson ends up at Auburn, but being 4th without a single visit is great. Get him in a room with Meyer and in the stands for a night game at the Shoe and we might pull another guy out of the South.

Then he goes to the Auburn/Bama or LSU/Bama game at night...

Alpo's picture

Not really that surprising, given that he hasn't visited yet. There's a lot of big name schools on that list (sans #14), that he has already visited. So I think even being top 5 is saying something. I'll check back after he actually visits and see what he says then. (fingers crossed)

Something with this kid just doesn't sit right with me. "Im announcing my top 15 schools!!!" Welllllll Ok!!! There is a reason others first saw him as a WR.   I'm of the Winbush faction here. Gibson is an Ultra Athlete and seemingly Ultra Diva!!! I'm sure more is to come.

They're athletic freaks and helped us win many games, but theres a reason why Braxton had to came back this year and why he won't be in NY this week.  He's a senior now and we're all saying "gee I hope Braxton can make the throws that we need him to this year".   I'm simply tired of project QBs.  Call me crazy but I think a QB should rely mostly on his arm instead of his feet.

I have never been on UT's campus.  Maybe someone can explain further to me, but what is the pull for them? They are bottom feeders in the SEC and I can not remember the last time they were even relevant. Still, not too worried wait for him to get on campus with the closer himself and catch a game and I am confident we will come out on top.

Eph97's picture

Early playing time I guess. I sort of follow them because the qb at my alma mater when I was there is their offensive coordinator now.

Poison nuts's picture

Say what you want about Tennessee...& we all know their fans are super weird twitter stalkers - but they have a tremendous overall history of winning. They are top 5 or 10 in overall wins & win % all time & that is always going to be seen as pretty special regardless of their recent suckbagedness. Throw in the early playing time & the whole SEC angle, & it can be a draw. However, wait for the season, because if they lose a ton of games again, it's gonna be fun to see who is still interested.

"Do not pass me, just slow down - I can move right through you" Superchunk - Precision Auto.

jamesrbrown322's picture

Apparently they have ridiculously amazing, brand new facilities. Also, gotta remember that their fans are going nuts and stalking him every day, telling him how great he is. I'd love to see him at OSU, but not going to those lengths.

Plus, the allure of the SEC is real, and the media keeps feeding the beast, as long as they keep winning (as a conference clearly, because Tennessee hasn't won a whole lot for half a decade), it will keep rolling. Plus, the girls are pretty damn good looking down here.

I wasn't shocked by #1, I was shocked by #3. But, let's wait until he gets on campus for the full on freak out. I'm just disappointed that OSU couldn't get another visit out of Wimbush.

I'll take this one, since I have a sister at UT.

Their campus is pretty beautiful, plus the Market Square area of Knoxville isn't a bad walk at all from campus, and that place kicks ass. Plus Knoxville has incredible weather. UT is a pretty great place to be, actually. Not that I'd trade being a Buckeye for anything.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

All I'm saying is I consider a football season by the year it ends. This upcoming season is 2015 to me, just the way I view it since the bowl season will finish in 2015. The Key is to NOT put all your Eggs in one basket like we have the past few yrs... this year is different, and should be able to come out with a 4-5 QB that fits the Offense well.    Last year we looked a bit foolish(more than once) after missing out the QB of choice...

Coach up these young adults and see what happens... we have nice depth at QB (but little experience).  Meyer should also make sure the second team QB gets reps this year, maybe not as many as Kenny G... but enough to build confidence for next year and the days with out Braxton.

This one is easy.  Wimbush gave Urban a silent verbal earlier in the week. Urban informed Gibson that the Buckeyes were moving on. To stay relevant, Gibson released his top 15 (after considering both a top 100 and top 50) being careful to not burn bridges, thus dropping tOSU just a couple of slots.

I honestly think this is one big troll move and he favors OSU a bit more. The lack of visit and placing us at #1 would take a lot of attention away from his recruitment as many think he is OSU bound anyways and him saying they are his favorite without ever having been to Columbus would effectively make it look like a done deal. We see moves like this quite often during recruiting seasons…like the Glenville kids and UK last year. Ill be more concerned with what he will do if he doesn't make a trip to Columbus before announcing. Im honestly more worried about the inevitable loss of Wimbush to PSU. Although having both in the class was a small possibility, it was still a relatively realistic one if OSU perhaps pushed harder for Wimbush. Also, this just continues the uncharacteristically amazing start to PSU recruiting under Franklin. Its going to be a while until we find out the destination of some of our other major targets like Damien Harrier or Kirk, and the wait is only going to get more taxing if PSU continues to snag guys we want.

+1 HS
dshepster's picture

OK, wimbush IS disappointing.  And who cares about the top 15 list.  But I am starting to get a little nervous.  Spring and summer recruiting is huge.  If we still have 2 recruits in 30-45 days, I will be officially nervous.  Many kids want this over with before fall. Many have said we have 9 mos. left, which we do.  But how many do you really think we are gonna flip.  And class leadership IS important.  We need some commits to make us all feel a little better.  Bring on the camps and let's get some kids in this class already!
