According to a report, both Frank Lampard and David Villa are headed to New York to play for New York City FC next year in their first season as an MLS club.

Big city clubs trying to buying championships. That's one thing I really don't like about the soccer world. Oh well.... hopefully it will grow the game here in the States.

As long as it helps spread the popularity of soccer in the USA then i'm fine with it.

Yeah thats awesome, big names like Villa and Lampard can only help. How do you really expect to get the best young talent in the states and then keep them from going to Spain, Italy or England?

Mac..yeah

I agree with Deadly Nuts.  Love how the game is growing in America, and this will only help!

This is big news, and I'm definitely excited about it.  David Villa is past prime, but still a world class player.  It won't be until the entire roster is decently paid that the quality of soccer will become class.  The English Championship and Liga X both have far greater average salaries.

you don't like teams spending a bunch of money to "buy championships"? Thats not a soccer problem, thats a problem across many professional sports, even those that have salary caps. Soccer is one of the only sports that actually has a system designed to develop players from their youth teams to eventually play for the senior squad, so if anything, soccer, in essence, promotes an idea of developing talent rather than buying it.

Always good to see quality players come to the MLS, even though the Crew got wrecked by the likes of Jermaine Defoe yesterday, smh.

I love my Seattle Sounders...............Century Link has an unbelievable fan base. I think it's the highest attended games in the MLS. Having the deuce at C.L. helps as well. There are some awesome rivalries within the MLS that are starting to take steam.

I do like things like this, but will only be truly excited about MLS when top players come here in their prime. This news would be amazing if it were 2006.

The money has to be there for this to happen.... If you were David Villa or Frank Lampard, would you rather play in America and get paid 5 or 6 million, or play in your home country and make over 10 times that amount?

I know what I would pick...

So I'll take what I can get... Because MLS will never be able to compete with the European leagues in terms of salaries until players like these come over to play. Whether they are in their prime or not.

Now if we could just get Federico to talk his younger brother into coming over and playing for the Crew. We can all dream, right?
