Dorian Johnson commits to.....

Pitt.

Pitt needed to go all out on his official visit this weekend to get him on board before he visited Ohio State and that is just what they did.

Good get for Paul Chryst and his staff.

Hopefully Urban can work some magic and get him to visit. I really don't get this decision play in front of 25k or 105k. Go to the little caesars bowl if your even bowl eligable or compete for national championships. Play and practice with and against elite players vs practice against mediocre guys

at least wait until after The Game to make decision. What the hell's the big hurry?

especially to a place like Pitt

sheesh.

ill-advised move & then some. I questions some of these kids' mindsets & their parents' mindsets.

Let's take it easy with the sour grapes here.  Believe it or not, some kids like schools other than OSU.

How does this get downvoted?

To be fair, Paul Chryst did send 7 O-linemen to the NFL in the past 6 years (six of them in the first 3 rounds of the draft), so I can see SOME logic in his choice. I'd still rather play for a potential Championship, which will probably not happen at Pitt in the next 4 years.

I agree that some kids may like other schools than OSU, nobody said they didn't BUCKEYEINANNARBOR...and I am aware of Paul Chryst's coaching O-Lineman into the NFL.

All I'm saying is the timing of it...why not wait at least a week so you can visit the best rivarly in all of sports and then make a decision. What's the big hurry?

I will say, the one positive about it is, if he absolutely KNEW he was going to commit to Pitt, it was better/nicer of him that he didn't drag it out any longer and just went ahead and committed. Let Meyer and Co. spend the time they were going to use on DJ on Dawson instead.

I didn't think you were; no worries, (didn't d-vote you, btw).

I was just more referencing the timing in regards to the common sensity of the decision, that was my bigger point.

I am disappointed and wish he would have waited another week to make his decision, but im not going to call it a bad decision. He probably has a better relationship with their coaching staff and feels more comfortable there. He also will have less competition and less pressure. Also, you can't really question Chryst's track record with getting linemen drafted early in the draft.

Don't understand why Buckeyeinannarbor is getting so many downvotes for saying that.

My opinion is that the timing is weird, but the decision makes sense. Some kids just prefer to stay close to home, folks. I'm sure we'll manage just fine without him.

I hope we use that scholarship on Timmons or on an extra Lb that will be visiting next week. No need to panic and offer undeserving o-lineman. We have plenty of quality freshmen, sophmores and incoming freshmen. 2014 class is filled with quality, interested O-line talent.

It is hard to understand the decision if you purely are looking at the programs and their competitaveness but I have a feeling there were other factors involved.  They still produce NFL players at Pitt,  they just don't win much or play on a national stage like the Buckeyes.  I wish him good luck.  Damn shame though cause we really need some speed and skill at his postion going into the next couple years.

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

This is the first year for our O-line coach and look at what he did with the guys we had. Bollman's guys! He's turned them into one of the best lines in college football. I think we'll start seeing the results of how good our O-line coach is in just a few seasons! Yeah it sucks that we didn't get Johnson but I honestly believe there will be bigger fish to come.

Dude, I get what you're saying & all, and I'm sure you have good intentions, but I find it laughable when people try to get all high & mighty & self-righteous....it's the INTERWEBS, dude!
c'mon. If you're looking for civility, chivalry, whatever the hell, etc.. GO LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE! You're not gonna find it on (probably the largest) fanbase for a college football team's most popular website.

I don't speak for everyone, but with the stress of life, the economy, etc. --- some of us may see the interwebs as a kind of release. And, no, not all of the jokes about Bielema, Hoke, Mark May, Michigan, etc. are 100% hateful & we don't mean every word...we're just having fun. It's called sarcasm.

Damn, what's with the oversensitivity. If you don't like the "childish" comments --- go somewhere else. People are just having a little fun. It's still a free country, right?

Same goes to the clown who created that "CHILDISH" thread. Dan whatever-the-fart-his-name is.

Relax.

Salvage the o-line recruiting? With Decker, Dodson and Lisle we are set with 3 awesome Tackle prospects. Boren is obviously the future center. Then at guard there is Farris, O' connor, Elfein, Baldwin, Underwood and Gardner. Those guys all have 3 to 4 years of eligibility and they all still have another whole year to sit behind the current starters an develop. If we totally wiff next year on bigtime prospects than I would be worried.

^ It's not like I'm upset by people saying these things.  But the fact is that this is a very respectable blog with, for the most part, some very good journalistic integrity.  Yes, I'm not a homer, but I come here instead of a place like bucknuts because I like the rational, analytic conversation that a lot of these posters present.  It's not being high and mighty, it's just understanding that good sports conversation is better when people don't write solely on emotion.

Well to be fair Paul Chryst isn't going to be his OLine coach and Urban has put first rounders off the line in the NFL as well but if he likes Pitt than that is his choice time to move on and focus on kids that want to be Buckeyes

Well bummer. I had a feeling he was going to stick with Pitt. I think this came down to distance and location more than anything. And I have to hand it to them for getting him to commit the week before visiting OSU for The Game. Well played Paul Chryst. Best of luck to the kid.

I don't really care if I get downvoted for saying this, but I am surprised at the amount of people on here dissing the kid for picking Pitt.

He did us a favor by announcing when he did.  He has been saying all along that Pitt had a lead and now our staff can focus on other prospects.  I would have loved to have him on the team.  In fact, he was my top remaining target for this class but not even Meyer can win them all.  By stringing us along we may have lost valuable time over the next few weeks when we could have been pursuing OTs in the next class.  Instead we know exactly where we stand a week away from a point where our coaching staff will have little to do other than set off season conditioning goals and recruiting.

Edit:  I think much of Hoke's success is due to our staff slow playing Ohio recruits.  Hoke steps in and says you have a garunteed offer for M******N but our spots are filling up.  If you wait on Ohio State, they may never offer.  By Johnson commiting now, we may end up offering someone earlier than we originally thought we would wait and see with and remove Hoke's angle.

It always amazes me when kids get knocked for going somewhere lower profile than Ohio State.  Sometimes the bigtime football atmosphere is not what a kid wants.  Big Ben went to Miami because he wanted to be in a more low key place.  If NFL scouts can find kids at places like Mississippi Valley State and Coastal Carolina, they'll certainly find great talent at Pitt.

We all know Ohio State is awesome and an amazing atmosphere, and it doesn't get any bigger that's for sure.  Not every kid wants to be a rockstar on campus though.  That also ignores the fact that kids commit for coaches too.  Maybe he had a great relationship with Chryst was the guy he wanted to play for.

NoVA Buckeye's picture
NoVA Buckeye on 18 Nov 2012 - 10:59pm #

I think what it came down to was playing time. Johnson would've had to wait until his 4th year to get playing time with Decker and Dodson ahead at the position he wants to play. I honestly believe he wanted to come here, but very few are willing to wait for glory on the field.

I think this is a complete joke... The kid is going to play in mediocrity for 3 years and then go to the NFL...  My point is this, if you're good enough to go to the NFL, it doesn't matter which team or coach you play for.  The scouts will find you!

Unky Buck's picture
Unky Buck on 19 Nov 2012 - 10:08am #

It might be best that he didn't commit to us. The way it looks, he doesn't think things through and gets all caught up in the moment. Pitt was his leader (or near the very top) before and then he goes to PSU for an official visit and commits on the spot without letting it soak in. After his decommitment, Pitt was still his top team and all but he made it sound like he wanted to make sure he was making the right choice...even as much as saying he was going to set up a Va Tech after his Ohio State visit. But clearly this wasn't the case...he got caught up in a moment at Pitt and chose them.

I know he's a kid and we shouldn't be hard on him. I do wish him the best, but you would hope that after he did that the first time that he'd learn from his mistake and take the time to really review all of his options before making a life altering decision.

i think this just shows that he was never really considering OSU as much as most ppl thought he was. When we first started recruiting him I never thought we would get him, but as I heard more and more info that he was highly considering us & the rumor was that he was actually starting to lean our way, I hoppd on the wagon for him to come to OSU.

But Im lost on why he chose to commit last night. Why not just wait another week or 2 (if he needed time to soak in The Game) and visit for the game to see what OSU really has to offer & watch a great game?

I just think he would of waited the week or so to announce after his visit to OSU for THe Game if he was really considering us. He was prolly heading to Pitt all along. I wont down grade the kid for picking Pitt, just dont understand why he didnt wait. Good Luck to the kid.
