BN Free--Gardner Commits To Ohio State
Tim Gardner Highlights- ESPN
Hill remains firm with Ohio State
DL Michael Hill of Pendleton remains firmly committed to Ohio State his coach said Friday afternoon. An internet report said Hill was having second thoughts about his pledge and might look closely again at USC. Hill had USC and Clemson in his final group. But coach Paul Sutherland said that while talking with Hill last night about another matter, Hill told him there was no wavering. “He said he was solid with Ohio State,” Sutherland said. Hill made multiple visits to USC and Clemson before deciding on the Buckeyes. “Ohio State did not outwork the instate schools,” Sutherland said. “He just grew up watching Ohio State on television and that was his favorite school.”
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State didn’t get any players to commit immediately following its first Friday Nights Lights camp at the Horseshoe, but the Buckeyes received a big hint about when they might expect an answer from one of the big guys they covet.
That would be big as in 6-foot-3, 280-pound Donovan Munger (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights).
The ESPN 300 defensive tackle came to Urban Meyer’s first camp in Ohio Stadium and walked away with a message.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Hybrid defensive end/linebacker Tyquan Lewis (Tarboro, N.C./Tarboro) came to Ohio State a month ago, hoping to pass the eye test with the Buckeyes.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Lewis did that and more, earning a committable offer at the camp on June 10.
At the Friday Night Lights camp at Ohio State, fans will be happy to know The Horseshoe passed the eye test with his mother, Tyronda Whitaker.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It was hard to miss Dennis Finley (Detroit/Cass Tech) at Ohio State's Friday Night Lights camp. Then again, it's hard to hide when you're a 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle who figures prominently on the Buckeyes' radar. While Finley didn't compete at the event, the high school senior-to-be wasn't about to ignore a chance to rub elbows with Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer and Co.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Coming into Ohio State's first Friday Night Lights camp, the buzz wasn't about who was there. It was about who was next at quarterback. With a quarterback already committed in the 2013 class in J.T. Barrett (Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider), the Buckeyes were looking to 2014 and wanted to see what players such as Caleb Henderson (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), Joey Duckworth (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville), Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner) and DeShone Kizer (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) could bring to the table.
ESPN 150 athlete Levonte Whitfield (Orlando, Fla./Jones) did not plan on competing at the Jimbo Fisher Camp last week, but once the 5-foot-9, 176-pound prospect arrived in Tallahassee, Fla., he could not resist getting on the field with his peers.
"I originally just wanted to make a visit, but I decided to camp anyway," Whitfield said. "It was a great experience being able to showcase my talent out there."
Whitfield has become a hot commodity this summer, picking up offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, West Virginia, South Carolina and UCF. A couple programs have emerged for the No. 113 prospect in the nation.
When linebacker Mike Mitchell (Plano, TX/Prestonwood Christian Academy) arrived in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., for the Champion Gridiron Kings event at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, he hinted that a decision might be coming soon.
"I am waiting for my parents to get here to my hotel and we plan to discuss things as far as my commitment goes," Mitchell said.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Urban Meyer’s first offer for the 2013 class when he became Ohio State’s coach in November went to Cleveland Heights (Ohio) receiver Shelton Gibson. Eight months later, the message from Meyer was still clear while at Friday Night Lights.
“They want to see it printed on my chest: ‘O-State,’” Gibson said.
The feeling is mutual. Gibson, No. 196 in the ESPN 300 and No. 11 in Ohio, has the Buckeyes as his leader after calling Auburn and Ohio State even for quite some time.
Clifton Garrett (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) came to Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp with the intention of chilling out and meeting some players he’d talked to on Twitter.
By the time it was over, the 6-foot-2, 218-pound Garrett was pumped to be in Columbus.
While he didn’t participate, Garrett caught the action from the stands and couldn’t believe the energy coming off the field and the buzz generating in The Horseshoe.
Caleb Henderson (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) has been high on Ohio State’s radar for several months, and the Mid-Atlantic quarterback could have taken one step closer to earning an offer from the Buckeyes following his performance at Friday Night Lights.
“I felt the camp went really well,” Henderson said. “I put the ball in the places it needed to be and felt I was really consistent with everything.”
Quarterbacks coach Tom Herman was talking with Henderson most of the night, and Henderson said Herman was happy with the way he threw.
Recruiting Central: Lawrence Central lineman Gardner picks Ohio State
Lawrence Central High School offensive lineman Tim Gardner didn’t hesitate when Ohio State offered a scholarship Saturday.
“I’ve always like them since I was a little kid,” Gardner said.
The 6-5, 315-pound Gardner knew for a month he was invited to Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights and was hoping for an offer over the weekend. Gardner said during the combine-style event he was coached by former Buckeyes star offensive linemen Orlando Pace and LaCharles Bentley.
Asked what he liked best about Ohio State, Gardner simply said tradition.
“His goal was to go there and get an offer and I’m happy for him,” Bears coach Jayson West said. “Obviously they think it’s a good fit so that’s the best part.”
Gardner also had offers from Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, Louisville and Toledo.
With the decision made, Gardner said he can concentrate on helping his team win the state title. Gardner, who weighed 340 last season, hopes to lose a few more pounds.
“I’m trying to play defense and offense this year,” said Gardner, who played right offensive tackle for the Bears.
This will be Gardner’s third year as starter. The Bears reached the 2010 Class 5A state final before losing to Fishers.
Working in front of the Big "O" and in the shadows of Block O was all Tim Gardner (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central) needed before committing to Ohio State. Gardner, who caused a bit of a stir when he tweeted in June that he was a Buckeye before having a committable offer, received that offer Saturday and is now the 16th member of Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class. "I'm excited," Gardner said. "It's the tradition. It's unreal to be under Coach Urban Meyer and to be with that program. What they had set up in the past is what they have now."
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- On Friday ESPN 150 linebacker Mike Mitchell (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian Academy) said he had planned to talk things over with his parents and was contemplating announcing his commitment Sunday during the Champion Gridiron Kings event at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Saturday night, however, Mitchell updated his timetable.
"I am going to hold off on my commitment because I have not been to Ohio State yet," Mitchell said.
The No. 121 prospect, who won the SPARQ Championship this month with a record 154.47 SPARQ rating, is considering Florida State, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

We're short on scholarships so much that we walked away from recruiting the #1 running back in the country yet we offer a FB for an offense that rarely uses the fullback?
Confused. Seems like a legacy situation and those rarely work out well. (see Shaun Lane, Adam Griffin)
doubt he was really offered.
William is saying that he's guaranteed a 2013 roster spot, not sure if he was offered or a preferred walk-on just yet.
Tim Gardner did the same thing a little while ago, look how that turned out
really hope people get the big picture about scholarships . the three we lost dont effect us as much as you carry on about .They really only effect the walk on's and the 4th and 5th yr guys ,who would finally get one, think about it !!!!!! and JOEY BOSA is a stud thats all i have to say is he is a stud !!!!
Like a boss
Edited:
Pulling Green's scholarship offer to offer William's makes no sense...highly doubt this a committable offer (he probably wouldn't be able to walk on either). Just my opinion but really makes no sense if you think about it.Saw he's a legacy (son of William Houston). My Bad Gene...should know better than question your Jedi powers;-) He'll walk on...I see him following in Dad's foot steps for sure.I really hope Green doesn't go to tTUN. He just may...and I think he'll be a tough one to tackle (DeVeon Smith and him will be a good tandem).
We'll see...but with 18 Ohio kids the last two years going to tTUN...I'm not too excited about that fact as far as UFM's recruiting style so far (last year I can't say was "all" UFM fault for the northern interest). However...hard to argue with national studs like Bosa, Spence, Schutt, Perkins, Woodard<(who Tress helped with too) and others that he's helped pull in since joining OSU. As well as local ones like Burrows and Lee who may have went elsewhere if it wasn't for Urban and the staff. I just hope some of those 18 kids don't come back to haunt us (or ones in the future that may attend AA). Just something to think about...

It's been clarified, Houston misunderstood the staff, it's a perferred walk-on spot, not a scholarship offer.
Updated with a lot of links
Two reports, different leaders for Garrett. Hmm....
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Yeah, that's the fun of the recruiting game lol, let's just say it's a tie at the moment
Garrett has said on Twitter that Sparty leads right now. fwiw
"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter
I'm confused about the Garrett comments. Bucknuts and Bill Kurelic says that OSU is his leader and Scout says that MSU is in the lead. Both posted today. If Sparty is in fact now leading how is that possible since Garrett was at FNL last night?
I wouldn't think about it too hard, I always thought the two were neck and neck
No worries Bhop :)
Updated
That wraps it up, gonna go get started on the next edition
Going to be interesting to see how the 2014 QB offers/commits pan out when they start getting issued in the fall... really like the kid from Toledo Central Catholic
Going to be sad if Derrick Green lights us up in the next 4 years knowing that we could have had him and gave him away to our biggest rivals.
While Green may very well end up t Michigan, I doubt he commits this weekend. He has had so many leaders in the past few months and has said more than once he wants to help get his teammates recruited which implies he won't commit until at least part way through the season. Hope it's no UM, but I feel like its a Bama, UM, Auburn battle
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Green will pull the trigger for Michigan this weekend. You can tell by reading his twitter timeline. Already calling out Ohio State fans - who, strangely enough, weren't actually tweeting at him but instead were tweeting back and forth with a Michigan fan.
He's just mad that we turned him away and is just trying to show increased interest in Michigan to "punish" us buckeyes. I don't see him committing before his senior season and I see at least 2 other schools being named his "favorite" before all is said an done
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
No offense, but that's stupid. He was interested in Michigan before we told him we were no longer recruiting him.
Some Ohio State and Michigan fans needs to get a grip on reality. First, yes, Ohio State did turn away Green, but not because he wasn't good enough - it's because we are limited this year in scholarships. Second, if Green commits to Michigan, then it is because Hoke has been kicking ass in recruiting. Don't like it? Fine. But don't deny it either.
EDIT: And, quite frankly, Hoke has been kicking Urban's ass as well this year. Much of that has to do with the groundwork laid last year before Meyer was even hired. But, still, look at guys like Gedeon who we sadly slowplayed. Look at McCray, who we offered WAAAY too late. Look at the offensive line recruiting. If Brady Hoke were at Ohio State, we'd be loving him right now.
The sky isn't falling, but Michigan will have the top offensive class in the country, by a mile. They'll have arguably the top QB, RB, and WR to go along with the consensus top offensive line. That's amazing considering how poor they were under Rodriguez.
@osu2002grad, per rival um is 3.57 and osu is 3.8. would not exactly say hoke the choke is getting the better of urban. in fact it seems to me urban has the better class at the moment, based on quality.
Star ratings are, themselves, overrated. Michigan was going to have a better recruiting class this year no matter what because of numbers. Overall, Michigan will probably have more 4-star recruits than Ohio State has recruits. So if you want to go be star average, I suggest you consider that.
The bigger problem is that Michigan is getting serious quality, mainly on offense. Once they get Treadwell and Green on board, it will be the best offensive class we've seen in a long time.
i would also say , that urban has national titles, hoke has what? urban will get the recruits he thinks he needs to win another title, i trust in urban, he is the expert, not i. buckle up folks and enjoy the ride. 3.8 so far per rivals, just wait til next year, he will rival usc recruiting. 4.25 per recruit at the very minimum.
yes osu2002grad, star ratings can be overrated, that being said, if all things are equal, then um must also have overrated recruits. i still trust in urban, do you? or do you trust in hokey?
Michigan isn't out recruiting OSU, do they have more players yes they do, but are they out recruiting no! Then I don't care how many offensive linemen they are getting, I don't care if D.Green signs with them either. Defense ... Defense ... Defense wins Championships!
exactly buckinbama, defense, urban is putting together an SEC defense, the big ten better get ready for it.
@Buckeyestu ... The funny thing is Urban is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. Absolutely loading up the defense, increasing overall team speed through training, and weight loss. Big athletic linemen to run his power spread, adding more versatility, and speed to the offense. I can't wait to see this team this season! When its all said and done we'll have an offense that averages 40+ points a game, and a defense that doesn't give up over 10-15 looks like a recipe for victory to me.
Michigan's recruiting success of late is scary, no doubt about it. The rivalry will be intense once again. But Meyer is not doing a bad job either and he has a proven record as a top notch coach. We will see what Hoke can do with all that talent. I have enjoyed watching OSU kick the shit out of UM on a regulary basis but I will aslo enjoy the The Game again.
i agree buckinbama. urban knows what he is doing and what he wants to accomplish, and he has done that twice so far. um has a nice class, for sure, but for anyone to say hoke is outrecruiting urban, that is one funny joke. what is um so proud of, their supposedly outstanding offensive line talent coming in? hhhmm, what about defense? what did urban say the difference was in the SEC in comparison to other leagues? the front 7 on defense, the speed of that front 7? am i right?
I wouldn't go as far as to say Hoke's out recruiting Urban. I would say Urban's not putting up a fence around Ohio as he said at the introduction as OSU's head coach. We'll see if a guy like Dymonte Thomas turns into a Woodson or Howard type (also not all UFM's fault...the "walrus" was DT's first recruiter in 2009-2011). My money is on that not happening (I hope). However 18 Ohio kids in the last two years going up North isn't putting up a fence if you ask me. Last year, coming in at the end of November, could give UFM a pass for that. This year with the same amount 9 (and please don't give me that we didn't offer any of them...because we offered a bunch in and out of state guys that UM have got or will, like Laquan Treadwell). Can't get them all I understand, and he's targeting more nationally which I like. Just a point...could be moot in the end but we'll see in 118 days;-)

Before you call me stupid maybe try actually reading my post. Never did I say that Green wasn't already interested in Michigan nor did I say we turned green away cus he wasn't good enough. And don't be so ignorant. If Hoke lands Green he didn't "kick Urbans ass" as you said. That is rediculous. He has landed a few Ohio guys Urban offered but it has long been rumored that Green likes OSU more than Michigan. So while it would be a nice pickup, I wouldn't call it a win over Urban
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
