University of Michigan Regents Kill Football Fireworks Shows

Fireworks at Michigan Stadium? The university's regents said no thank you.

Just four days after asking the university's Board of Regents to approve post-game fireworks shows at two Michigan home football games this year, the regents have answered: No.

As to why the request was denied, regent Mark Bernstein may have said it best:

“We are not Comerica Park, Disney World or a circus ... ” Bernstein said. “I love Michigan football for what it is ... and for what it is not. It remains and should be an experience, a place that resists the excesses of our culture; intentionally simple.

“The fireworks should be on the field, not above it.”

While often misquoted, Bo Schembechler never actually said, “Those who stay will see fireworks,” so we're with Bernstein on this one.

Prior to the fireworks stunt, Michigan tried to woo students and fans with free donuts and Groupon. Both failed and here we are, staring at something that's completely unrecognizable to longtime Ohio State fans.

In unrelated news, Ohio Stadium has a real chance to outdraw the Big House this season.

It's probably because it's early but I kind of burst out laughing at the office. Happy Friday guys.

You know, you just can't make this stuff up.

Josh Groban, rubbing stuffed animals on players to get them pumped up, hiring a coach with a losing record, donuts and now fireworks.  If I had told you 7 years ago that all these things would happen you would have laughed at me.

Bo must be turning over in his grave, don't you think?

Consider this, it was only 8 years ago that we had the Game of the Century.  Two teams at 11-0.  Since that game they have a 50-40  record and are 2-4 in bowls.

You see what happens when you let the little people make decisions? That's why department heads ( Athletic Directors or even smaller people, Head Coaches), don't make decisions on their own.Got it? Learn from this. GO BUCKS!

I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

ADs and HCs are little people?  And they're not supposed to make decisions on their own?  Am I missing something here?  Sarcasm?

This isn't a vote of confidence for Dave Brandon from the Regents...he might want to dust off the resume in case things don't work out in the next year+.

They probably started looking when he brought up the "genius idea" in the 1st place.

Some might see Bernstein's public response as one way of saying, 'we'd rather see the football program provide us all with the fireworks on the field' - no pressure Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke. [Edit - just saw DJ's Skull Session post of Mr. Bernstein tweeting this very sentiment - at least they have someone up there who knows how to hold Dave Brandon accountable! - DJ, sorry I posted this before I read your Skully today]

Mr. Brandon, marketing may be a game of winning the perceptions and imaginations of your customers, but it's only as good as the product you are selling at the end of the day.

In fairness, Dave Brandon is not used to working with products worth more than $5.... Thats why he is perfect for michigan.

Yeah, well…that’s just like, your opinion, man.

Mark Bernstein is the newest member of the Board.  I think he's the youngest.  He's one of the more aggressively partisan members.  Coming from the background of tv personal injury lawyer (1-800-CALL-SAM), a little Twitter grandstanding is not unexpected.

As much as there was a despicable amount of undermining of Rich Rodriguez in Ann Arbor, there is a very deep lobby of support for Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke.  Brandon has far deeper Ann Arbor roots than Mark Bernstein, and the sort of Michigan football experience and connections that Bernstein could only dream of.

Prediction: Brandon will be out in three years or less, *next* year is Brady Hoke's last at UM (After going 1-4 vs. Ohio State), and the coaching job will go to either Jim Harbaugh or Doug Nussmeier.

Can you imagine Urban vs. Harbaugh? Glory days.

In three years, Dave Brandon may be running for governor.  There is less of a chance of that right now (Michigan's current attorney general, Bill Schuette, would be the clear front-runner) than I might have thought a couple of years ago, but three years is a long way off.

The current Michigan governor, Rick Snyder, is very good friends with Brandon and I have little doubt but that Snyder would much rather see Brandon as his successor, than Schuette.  There's also the Michigan Lt. Governor, Brian Calley, who has been a very loyal and faithful Snyder footsoldier.

Maybe this is as close as Brandon wants to get, to public affairs.  I've heard Brandon say things like how he put much, much more personal time into defending the spurious NCAA allegations against the Rodriguez football staff than he did into a $1.5 billion stock offering.  And how the one thing that has amazed him as AD is how many more "moving parts" there are, compared to being the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

They better take what they can get because it's gonna be a very long long time time, if ever again, before they have 'fireworks' on the field again.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

But, Brandon is the smartest AD in the world . . . he's a genius . . . fireworks good . . . it enhances "the Michigan experience" . . .  even tOSU has fireworks . . .

Or not.

I think Dave Brandon should take Marketing 101 from Stringer Bell, with emphasis on how to market an inferior product.
