Just four days after asking the university's Board of Regents to approve post-game fireworks shows at two Michigan home football games this year, the regents have answered: No.
As to why the request was denied, regent Mark Bernstein may have said it best:
“We are not Comerica Park, Disney World or a circus ... ” Bernstein said. “I love Michigan football for what it is ... and for what it is not. It remains and should be an experience, a place that resists the excesses of our culture; intentionally simple.
“The fireworks should be on the field, not above it.”
While often misquoted, Bo Schembechler never actually said, “Those who stay will see fireworks,” so we're with Bernstein on this one.
Prior to the fireworks stunt, Michigan tried to woo students and fans with free donuts and Groupon. Both failed and here we are, staring at something that's completely unrecognizable to longtime Ohio State fans.
Michigan went from being the least schlocky program in CFB history to the ambassadors of schlock in under a decade. It's breathtaking.
