Major Applewhite Scored at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl
Major Applewhite, offensive coordinator for the football team, released the following statement to The Daily Texan through a spokesman:
"Several years ago, I made a regretful decision resulting in behavior that was totally inappropriate. It was a one-time occurrence and was a personal matter. Shortly after it occurred, I discussed the situation with DeLoss Dodds. I was upfront and took full responsibility for my actions. This is and was resolved four years ago with the University.
Through counsel I have worked with my wife and the incident is behind us. I am regretful for my mistake and humbled by this experience. I am deeply sorry for the embarrassment it has caused my friends, family, and the University. I appreciate all of them. I’ve learned and grown from this and look forward to my work at Texas."

The obvious question for us is whether this has any effect on Dontre Wilson's visit to UT this weekend and/or his commitment decision. Doesn't seem like it will, unless more details emerge and Major is reprimanded further.
Oh, this is how the Major issue might blow up into something big for Texas and potentially lead to Major Applewhite's ouster...which would affect Wilson's status as a Longhorn recruit.
Kearney was the womaen's track coach who was forced out earlier this year after admitting that she had an affair with a student years ago. Looks like Major may have received preferential treatment b/c he's on the FB coaching staff. This might turn ugly and repulse Wilson away from Texas (and perhaps toward OSU!).
I see a few differences between the situations: she was the head coach and had an affair with one of HER student athletes (not just a student, I guess) and the relationship lasted for up to 4 years.
The similarity would be that they both had affairs with women. I'd like to think the student/coach proximity is the factor that creates a difference in punishment, but it's Texas, after all...
I'm sorry, can you elaborate on that last statement, "It's Texas, after all...?"

Super Bowl week. The best time to come clean about anything if you played high level football. Props to Major Applewhite and Texas's PR staff, between the Super Bowl and Dan Marino I'm surprised this story was even noticed. Good find.
And hope you're right ATX, but I'd be stunned if Dontre Wilson is affected at all, the NCAA is very busy investigating themselves right now.

It's a story because of Bev Kearney. The UT System Board of Regents doesn't call emergency Sunday meetings for non-stories.
Let me clarify that - the fact the he did what he did - in the scheme of the wrongs people do in this world, is not news-worthy to me personally. I'm not critiqueing that 11W reported it - I do understand it is legitimate news...

All good. I just had the impression that some weren't connecting the Kearney dots which makes this story very worth of a late Friday night news dump from UT's perspective.
Not sure why it has become a big deal now, when it happened years ago. I thought the school already knew about it.
