"Secrecy ruled, and reaction to complaints of improper sexual behavior was to remain silent...all part of a deep-rooted reflex to protect the sacred football program."
I see the folks over at BSD have latched onto Sara Ganim's latest report into McQueary's credibility. Her Sunday article in the Harrisburg Patriot-News reveals that McQueary gave another version of what he witnessed to family friend Jonathan Dranov (who conveniently was present when Mike gave his first description of the events to his father). Dranov's grand jury testimony recounts that discussion as follows:
McQueary heard "sex sounds" and the shower running, and a young boy stuck his head around the corner of the shower stall, peering at McQueary as an adult arm reached around his waist and pulled him back out of view.
Seconds later, Sandusky left the shower in a towel.
I guess if I were a Penn State fan I also would be grasping at anything that supports the inculpability of Paterno and the PSU institution.
What's lost to the folks over at BSD is what the AP writers above are alleging -- that there is a culture in play at PSU (and throughout the state) to protect Paterno and the football program by covering up and diminishing Sandusky's actions. I hope someone is now investigating both Dranov and McQueary's father's accounts of this discussion. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that this was a deliberate attempt to obfuscate McQueary's original testimony.
I originally didn't support the NCAA and Big Ten doing their own investigations of the scandal. Maybe multiple invesitigations is a good idea afterall. Seems like the more people reviewing this, the more the likelihood that the truth will come out.
How many times has McQueary's story changed some? First he saw it and didn't do anything to stop it, then he stopped it, now he didn't see anything. I don't know this story stinks more and more. I agree with you, the more folks digging into this the better. They can't allow this crap to get covered up or brushed aside as no big deal.
Why isn't Vicky Triponey getting whistleblower protection in going public about Paterno's influence in covering up transgressions at PSU?
The above article includes a section that implies Penn State's legal office has taken action to shut her up.
When Triponey was called last week for comment about the reaction to her note, her husband explained that she isn't talking publicly about the email anymore. He said she had received a letter from a Penn State lawyer taking issue with her characterizations.
"It flies in the face of transparency," said Robert Meacham, Triponey's husband, especially coming from a university that has pledged a new openness in the aftermath of the Sandusky scandal.
Triponey was vice president of student affairs at Penn State from 2003 to 2007. She came to Penn State from a similar position at UConn. Take a look at this article for her outsider's perspective of Paterno's influence and the culture at PSU.
