Smith Makes It a Glenville Trio

The Gray Box returns with Glenville's Erick Smith committing to Ohio State after some rumors that he might hold off on making an announcement. The commitment from Smith gives Ohio State 20 pledges in their heralded class and Marshon Lattimore could soon make it a Glenville Trio for the Buckeyes.

There was some confusion whether or not the four-star safety would make a commitment during the Army All-American game, but he decided he was ready. Earlier in the week, it was reported that he would postpone his decision in favor of officially visiting Michigan and Michigan State. That ended up not be the case, as he committed to the Buckeyes, as originally expected.

While some fans wondered if Erick Smith was truly worthy of an Ohio State offer, the Ohio native impressed at Friday Night Lights in the summer and would finish his high school career off with a strong finish that ended up with a loss in the championship game. His stock has risen to the point where he is now considered the 146th best prospect in the nation, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He capped off his career with an excellent week of practice in San Antonio, drawing praise from various analysts in attendance.

Smith's commitment gives Ohio State more depth in the secondary, a group that Ohio State has struggled with under Urban Meyer. While many project Smith as a safety, the four-star prospect was impressive at corner during the Army All-American practices.
