Erick Smith is Number 20

Smith Makes It a Glenville Trio

The Gray Box returns with Glenville's Erick Smith committing to Ohio State after some rumors that he might hold off on making an announcement. The commitment from Smith gives Ohio State 20 pledges in their heralded class and Marshon Lattimore could soon make it a Glenville Trio for the Buckeyes.

There was some confusion whether or not the four-star safety would make a commitment during the Army All-American game, but he decided he was ready. Earlier in the week, it was reported that he would postpone his decision in favor of officially visiting Michigan and Michigan State. That ended up not be the case, as he committed to the Buckeyes, as originally expected.

The Erick Smith File

  • Size: 6-1/185
  • Position: DB
  • Class: 2014
  • School: Glenville (Cleveland, Ohio)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★★

While some fans wondered if Erick Smith was truly worthy of an Ohio State offer, the Ohio native impressed at Friday Night Lights in the summer and would finish his high school career off with a strong finish that ended up with a loss in the championship game. His stock has risen to the point where he is now considered the 146th best prospect in the nation, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He capped off his career with an excellent week of practice in San Antonio, drawing praise from various analysts in attendance.

Smith's commitment gives Ohio State more depth in the secondary, a group that Ohio State has struggled with under Urban Meyer. While many project Smith as a safety, the four-star prospect was impressive at corner during the Army All-American practices.

Continue to follow Eleven Warriors as Ohio State hopes to land a commitment from four-star athlete Marshon Lattimore.

Highlights? Highlights.

This is great! also sounds like he could get a bump on 247 after this week.

BenedictineBuck's picture

Just watched him blow up a screen and a couple plays later sprint to the sideline and lay the wood on Ed McCaffrey's son, he is gonna be a welcome addition!!

Because we couldn't go for three!!!

BuckGnome's picture

DB's that can tackle.  Yes please.

teddyballgame's picture

Yup, good physical player who doesn't shy away from contact at all.  I heard the announcers note that he already seems good at "wrapping up" when tackling too.

BenedictineBuck's picture

Definitely gonna be a good one!! Is it too early to make a little taller Antoine Winfield comparisons??

Because we couldn't go for three!!!

I loved when he sheds the block and makes a tackle on a wr screen. Sometimes it's about attitude and determination.

Was easy to see how excited he is to be a Buckeye. That was one of my favorite announcements just because you could see how happy he was.

No so fast my friend. Bell didn't miss a tackle yesterday. I still think Burrows, Conley, Apple, and Thompson can be great db's.
