Devin Smith Will Return for Senior Season

December 12, 2013 at 10:50a    by DJ Byrnes

Ohio State is undefeated when Devin Smith catches a touchdown pass, and that stat will still be a thing when the 2014 season opens up:

Hopefully Smith can fill some of the veteran leadership in the receiving corps that used to be provided by the man they call Philly Brown.

hahaha I think the 3 field crew workers in the background did as well!
Their reactions are priceless.

Good news, indeed.  With all the departures we're going to need him to channel Terry Glenn.

Philly and...Chris Fields?  Not a ton of departures at WR.

Glad to hear it.  Now talk to RDS to do the same thing.  Maybe you can change Roby's mind as well.

Didn't expect him to leave, but still good to hear.
It will be nice to see what the WR group looks like next year. Hopefully some of the underclassmen can start getting on the field. I'm excited to see what players like James Clark and Jalin Marshall can do.

If OSU is undefeated when Devin catches a TD pass, why not pass it to him in the end zone every game? I'ma hang up and listen.

Do you happen to play Madden and NCAA Football also?  I'm thinking you have a future in this.

I do, but I'm awful at making powerpoint presentations.

Try staying at a Holiday Inn Express the night before the presentation. It totally helps.

You need a GA to help you out with that.

I think that Devin Smith has the measurables and would perform well enough at the combine where he would have been drafted. I think he could have made the jump.
That being said, WELCOME BACK DEVIN!!! Now, get working on Braxton officially staying and then become a dynamic QB/WR duo (a la Boyd/Watkins).

Throw the ball deep take the top off the defense

seafus26's picture

I agree, when Braxton does throw one of his rain makers that the Receiver and DB end up waiting on or one of his quackers. When he does get the nose of the ball up and not that extreme arc Devin runs as smooth as any receiver we have under it. Taking the top off is there, when Devin allows it. Won't have any Kenny G deep balls, next year

Great to have him back, he is a legit deep threat for us and our offense is only going to be better with him returning.

Barnsey69's picture

I think he can have a great Orange Bowl if they incorporate him a little more in the game plan...but I'll settle for incorporating the defense as a whole instead....

I don't think anything official has been released on this, he just hinted at it... I'm sure they will check into his draft stock before anything becomes official.

What is this? A center for ants?!? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?

buckeyepastor's picture

Wise move by Devin.  I don't think he's there yet.  If MSU is too much for him to get open and hold onto the ball when it does come to him, I don't see how he's ready to do it in the NFL.

He got open at times but was forced to wait on balls the were poorly thrown and or behind him

The big one is Shazier.  Given the help needed on defense, having him one more season would be HUGE.

Shazier is ready to go.But Brax and Smith are not.I think the O Line will be fine next year especially if chase Faris go back there.

RedsBuckeyeBoy's picture

Shazier would definitely be huge, but by this time next year we'll be reading about him in the "Buckeyes in the NFL" articles. He is definitely ready to suit up on Sundays.
I'm hoping against reason that he channels Mike Doss and comes back for his senior season (and a title!), but I just can't see it happening.

This is actually really great news. Not that many expected him to go - but he's a big play threat & seems to come through when needed so having him there with the younger guys is good. He also had a little case of the dropsies on easy catches in 2012 that wasn't there in 2013. Next year, there are a lot of pieces to replace, but if Braxton comes back - a final four appearance could be a very good possibility.

Devin coming back can only mean good things.  I really think Miller and Shazier will both be back.  With the delay of an announcement (to me) means they're not gaging how early they'll go in the draft if they haven't declared yet. I really don't think the body of work is going to hinge on The Orange Bowl IMHO.  I think they're all back but Roby and the Seniors.  The O line is what's going to hurt if you ask me about next years holes in the line up.
Think about it like this, the offense needs a leader, who better than Braxton.  Now the defense will as well, who better than RDS.  If you ask me, neither one is NFL ready.  RDS needs more weight (yes BuckeyeJason you're right with your comment back early in the season. I agree he's not 235, calling BS on that one).  And Braxton needs to improve as a passer in order to be successful in the NFL.  Bottom line is, he's not there yet.  Just look at his passing numbers against the most NFL ready secondary OSU played (yeah, 8/21 with 38% completion percentage isn't going to cut it).

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Smith tweeting conflicting messages.  Apparently Greene "heard" that, but I guess Smith isn't set 100%.

Buckeyejason's picture

If we had a more pass heavy offense..Smith would put up INSANE numbers and would be a much higher draft prospect IMO. The drops don't help his cause but..all he does is catch TD's!
He has good size speed and playmaking ability..just needs more catches IMO.

We also have Jeff Greene who will be eligible to play (6'4" 210 lbs.), so with Devin Smith returning, it appears we have the edge WRs taken care of. It will be interesting to see, out of the returning corps of WRs and underclassmen, who will take Philly's spot as that sort of go-to possession guy.
