The perks from having a father that is the head coach of the Buckeyes.

Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith just won Throwback Thursday, today, as well as for the foreseeable future when he posted this photo of himself as a young boy in the arms of Chris Spielman at what looks to be the team's media day in 1987.

It's probably safe to assume that Smith – grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce – has his dream job right now.

How awesome would that be, to grow up on the sidelines at the Shoe and then come back to that same sideline for your vocation!

That is soooo awesome.     Runs deep around here!

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

I worked with his Dad Tim and remember when he had Jim Karsatos working with him when he was in HS, Tim Married (now divorced) Earls daughter.  I think it was Zach, although it could have been one of his sons so may not be a 100% accurate.  I know I would always joke with Tim and say he had a "Tribe" or full basketball team at home even though his youngest was a daughter.

That pic was used in the recent article about Coach Smith in the Plain Dealer. Very cool.

Gave me chills!  Way to go Zach -- this is the stuff of which legends are made.
Now would you please ask Spiels if he'd be willing to come back to coach our LBs?

Remain calm.  It's only a game.

Look how big Spielman's hand is.  Maybe it's because Zach Smith is so small, but still...

That's a grown man sized set of dick skinners right there.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

This photo has to make Spielman feel old as hell.

yrro's wife here (sorry, wasn't worth creating an account)
I went to elementary and middle school with Smith. Didn't know him well, but saw him a lot.
At the time, he was 'That Michigan Kid'. You know, the one who paints his face maize and blue, the one who wears shirts and makes comments just to stir the pot. This was in suburban central ohio, so most of the time he was the only one in a sea of red, and he was certainly the only one who spoke up about it.
Don't want to speculate on the reasons for this. I only learned he was Bruce's grandson after I was quite a bit older. Since he got the coaching job, I've considered whether I could find old yearbook or other photos (he was totally the type to get his picture in the yearbook in Michigan gear), but I haven't found time to go digging. Him being on our sidelines has always been a bit of cognitive dissonance for me.

Further confusing the issue, his grandfather coached at Ohio State, he grew up in Central Ohio, and the recent Plain Dealer article on him states "Now, that same toddler once cradled by the massive paws of linebacker Chris Spielman is coaching at the only school about which he ever fantasized." (emphasis added)
So why would he be a maize and blue kid?!?

So does Zach smith have a brother named charlie?

Smith is lucky. I'd feel privileged just to be the water boy for the Buckeye football team.
