That pic kinda looks like the Neutron Man. . .

ScarletGray43157's picture

That's what I thought too.  Neutron Man became a persona after this version of Brutus, did he not?

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

Jonnferrell's picture

I still have a neck tie with the big paper mache' nut style Brutus on it from Lazarus.  It's motley looking, but I just can't throw it away.  LOL

"I miss Brady Hoke."

If you offered to sell that on here, you would be amazed at how much people would pay for that.

Especially if it was purchased at Kahiki...

Oyster's picture

I'd be willing to bet he wore it to the Kahiki, while wearing a Leisure Suit and white shoes!

Why didnt they ever re-open that? The kahiki is a very special place for my parents I believe my dad asked my mom to marry him there.

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust...but life goes on.

That was a pretty cool look. I'm not old enough to remember most of those. Nice to reminisce about it

I will forever be thankful for the day the 1964 Athletic Council decided against a buck deer as mascot. The road kill or "Deer in the headlights" comments after the 2006 BCS Championship game would have made a difficult situation unbearable.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

Never been a fan of the current Brutus logo/mascot. He's too cartoony or childish looking. Not intimidating at all. I like this wayyy better. Reminds me more of the only depiction I truly like, which is this:

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

I think my favorite version was actually the giant buckeye boulder from the heisman commercial from a few years ago.

KBonay's picture

I don't see the 'smile' on this one, he looks kinda sad.  And I am sure this Brutus suffered imense back pain.  Very cool article though.

doodah_man's picture

It is funny that this was the Brutus the year before Woody was fired. Notice the resemblance between Brutus and Earl Bruce?

The hat is all wrong.

Have you tried Not Your Father's Root Beer?  It tastes just like the real thing, but it packs a punch (5.9%ABV).  It's a little sweet for me though.  Two is my limit.

Relax, the headband is there, it's just under the hat!

Is it true that mascots take on the look and mannerisms of their head coach?
Did you notice Brutus wearing friggin flip-flops in this version? This ain't f#%^ing Hawaii!
And having no arms would suck.

Earle Bruce wore flip-flops ?

When did we officially become the Buckeyes? The timeline suggests in the 60's. Side note: Man does our new logo suck.

Haybucks's picture

Brutus has certainly evolved to a more advanced anthropomorphic stature than his fellow plant-based mascots.

The Popeye fiberglass head looked less like a buckeye and more like a prune.

LSD - Ain't it great!  Boy I wish we could go back to the 70's.

AJW_16's picture

The '75 Brutus needs to make an appearance. Perhaps the team can wear throwback '75 jerseys for that game?

What can I say, I like to experiment with different looks from time to time.

This is the best Brutus IMHO! Fear the Nut!

I like this one too, in addition to the pic to the left of my name.

'75 Brutus looks remarkably like the Neutron Man.

I think it's time for Brutus to retire the "rugby shirt" and go to something more current and athletic. I'm sure Nike would very much like to be involved.

I'd have to say, that 1980 buckeye looks pretty awesome...

"Squinting eyes" and "vicious sneers" are always the first thing that comes to my mind when describing Buckeyes.

Gosh, I never knew that Mr. Hankey was our mascot in 1965. Glad we went to Brutus because Mr. Hankey the Buckeye Poo sounds kinda shitty.

I'm a hurtin' buckaroo.

I love the hat or tam on the blinking Brutus.  It seemed like when was a kid all the cab drivers in Columbus wore them on game day.  I was from Chillicothe, so those hats were the symbol of all things "big city" to me as a kid.
