Today marks the beginning of summer term, which means 19 members from Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class will join their five comrades that enrolled early. For fans, this means the all important jersey numbers of the new class is starting to emerge.

The numbers for the five early enrollees – Eli Apple (13), Cam Burrows (16), J.T. Barrett (16), Tyquan Lewis (59) and Tracy Sprinkle (93) – have been known for months as the players participated in spring camp and suited up for Ohio State's spring game in Cincinnati. The numbers for the remainder of the class, however, is only partly known at this time.

Using information gleaned from Twitter and other sources, we're able to determine the numbers of all but five members of this class at this time.  We know Vonn Bell will wear No. 7, Joey Bosa will rock No. 97, Ezeikiel Elliott will sport No. 15, Jalin Marshall will wear No. 17 and Dontre Wilson will don the coveted No. 1, but we're not so sure about guys like James Clark, Trey Johnson, Evan Lisle, Donovan Munger and Corey Smith.

When we have that information, which should be finalized shortly, we'll be sure to update the table on this page, so you have it and can sound like a boss when making observations during the opener.

Doesn't the #1 jersey have to be awarded to a player, usually to a leader who proves himself over the summer? I think Wilson is going to be great, but I thought that was a thing under Urban.

He did make Roby earn it last summer allegedly.  Could have been a recruiting promise he made to Dontre?

"I just want to be the best. Why not wear number one?," Roby said. "I just had to show them that I was ready to wear the number one."

Roby said he asked for the switch months ago, but was finally awarded the change this summer by coach Urban Meyer.
"He called me and he just said 'I'm going to give you number one like you asked,'" Roby said. "He said 'you showed the things you told me you were going to do and you showed me the things I see in here you go.'"
Roby said he's honored that Meyer granted his request and feels a responsibility to live up to it.
"It means a lot because he's Urban Meyer," Roby said. "He has the name behind him and the history behind him...but I don't play for that..I don't play to impress anybody...I play because I want to be the best."

Hopefully Vonn Bell is the next great #7, my favorite Buckeye number.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

Vonn Bell is wearing the same #7 as my favorite past Buckeye "Star," Jermale Hines.
In a perfect world, Bell will somehow combine Hines-like aggression, toughness, instincts in run/screen support, with Eric Berry-like coverage/center-field skills.
A guy can dream . . .

I would like to see Clark in #3 and Corey Smith in #4
Trey Johnson would look good wearing #9

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

Is there a reason for this?  Am I missing something?

actionstanleyjackson's picture

Not sure I understand what you are asking?

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

Mitchell's 44 is like a warning sign for opposing running backs...BEWARE, this man runs a 4.4.

millertime2011's picture

But Mitchell doesn't run a 4.4...he runs a 4.39 :-) I guess you couldn't pick a 3 digit number haha

AndyVance's picture

Mitchell wearing 44 is a warning sign alright. It looks something like this:

Perfect number for The Abusement Park.

I can get used to seeing this again live, a few times over the next few seasons.

One Bad Buckeye's picture

I really can't wait to see M2 run chase down a running back from behind and inflict pain.

"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."

44 magnum. Cheesy? Yes, but those like Eric Davis wore it so well

Santonio Holmes was originally a #17.

I'm just happy to be here

Rod Smith is #2 unless he has changed something that we all haven't heard about.

I saw a UFO told me to have a goodyear!

Love to see Youngstown native Billy price 54 taking over where Youngstown native Simon 54 left off

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

errrrr... At reciever we have Corey Brown and Devin Smith... And now we have Corey Smith.
I'm getting confused.

Yes, that gets a little tricky!

All players that have a last name beginning with the letter G should get the #7! They all become legends! Ginn, Gamble, Galloway, Greene, Germaine, Gordon!

Getting the feeling that Munger might not make it...his tweets are discouraging

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

AndyVance's picture

Now I remember why I quit reading recruits/players Tweets: you've sucked me back in and I'm sitting here pondering what he could possibly be talking about that sounds so damn ominous.

UrbanCulture's picture

Has he deleted them? I just looked at his twitter and havent seen anything bad

AndyVance's picture

I wouldn't say he's said anything bad or wrong, just... ominous. For example:

Or from earlier in the afternoon:

Or, from last Friday:

Now, it could be such a thing that he's got to take remedial math or make up some credits or something like a lot of incoming students do, and he's just dreading it. I don't know the inner workings of the freshman football players' mind, which I why I stopped reading these kids' Tweets... and then something pops up that sucks me right back in again...

Has a Buckeye every worn 0 or 00?  Is that even possible anymore?  I know they used to back in the day.

Boomcat's picture

It might take a while for me to adjust to Bell wearing #7. I'm so used to Travis Howard wearing it for some reason.

Marshall is from my hometown and 17 is my birthday! Love it!

Bet you can't say "Bert Bielma is a bumbling buffoon" five times fast.
