Ready, Set, Vote on a Logo for the College Football Playoff

By Jason Priestas on April 24, 2013 at 9:30a
Five days to vote!

We're still 616 days away from the first College Football Playoff, but you can get in on the action early by going to the event's website at and voting for your choice for a new logo. You may choose from the four options presented at the site, and while this fan outreach is a great idea, we all know the logo we'll get is the one the vote-riggers in Aggieland want us to have.

First one's not that bad, but I'm really not digging on that compass rose one--and it has 58% of the vote right now.

Poison nuts's picture

Agreed on that...not feeling that compass one at all.

"Do not pass me, just slow down - I can move right through you" Superchunk - Precision Auto.

cronimi's picture

Agreed. The fact that the compass one is running away with it makes me think 4chan or Anonymous is involved.

thowen79's picture

I voted for the first one, but I think I was influenced by Hodge's comment on it ...they are all pretty lame.

bbase22's picture

I'm still amazed that College Football Playoff is the best they could come up with...completely uninspired and generic...kind of like these logos we're supposed to choose from

Second from the right is my favorite

You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.

Michael Citro's picture

These results so far are a tremendous argument against giving fans the right to vote on anything.

Stories like this remind me of the classic Tommy Lee Jones line from Men In Black: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

Bucks43201's picture

I vote for the second one going left to right, (the light brown/old gold vertical football). I like things clean and not busy-looking, that's just me though.

I agree completely.

Columbus to Pasadena: 35 hours.  "We're on a road trip through the desert looking for strippers and cocaine... and Rose Bowl wins!"

buckeyedude's picture

I agree. The one on the far right is too sadistic looking. Reminds me of a kidney stone I passed a few years ago. Yikes!
I like the far left one the best with it's patriotic theme, and the one next to it second best.

BuckNutInAnnArbor's picture

If these are the only choices... I guess the second from the left.  These look like they got inspiration from USFL and Blitz: The League.

I actually like the compass one. Kind of reminds me of the Game of Thrones.

The South will NOT rise again!

It just keeps getting worse and worse doesnt it. Its like they woke up the day before the deadline and threw darts at a board.

Can I vote for none of the above!?! Whoever they had on the "design" committee should've went for something creative compared to these four Paint generic logos, perfect logos for such an generic name, I guess. Why didn't they have a fan contest with the fans designing logos and having the fans decide on which one they like the most. That's would make too much sense. Heck, I took numerous graphic design courses throughout my college degree, which could product a better logo. If I had to pick one I would say the compass design on the far right.

What is worse, the fans selecting the WORSE one... or the fact it made it to the final 4!? I mean, seriously, don't put up options you know suck unless you are willing to live with that option.

BUCKI06's picture

I'm pretty sure these are all Clip Art selections from Microsoft Office.

Eh...who cares?  They are all pretty meh.
Even when they don't make the choice, they still get it wrong.

These are all very under whelming, but my vote would be for the Compass one.

They might as well have drawn a stick figure football player in MS Paint and put "College Football Playoff" under it.

Not voting. They all suck!
EDIT: Might as well used this one

that one reminds me of the auburn logo.

Seems to me like they should just go with the generic block lettering and skip the logo, just to be consistent with the name.

Snarkies gonna snark.

Is that a chinese star?

Bucksfan's picture

Did they let 3 year olds design these with Microsoft Clip Art?  There are thousands upon thousands of graphic designers out there, and these are the best results?  What the hell?

alust2013's picture

The NCAA spent millions of dollars on the name and this?

...and Michigan still sucks.

Hovenaut's picture

The left one, with its 'Murica theme.

I'll sit and wait to see what's chosen.....

Matta World Peace's picture

One of two things is going on here...
Based on what I'm looking at, there's a good chance the only software available to the logo design team was NCAA 2004's Create-A-Team logo generator from Dynasty Mode. If so, we should cut them some slack. The options are really pretty limited compared to more recent releases.
Second, I see a little XFL Birmingham Thunderbolts in logo #4. The logical explanation here is that 12 years later, the WWE's logo design  focus group is now in their mid to late twenties and have mellowed out just enough to do some freelance work for Mr. Emmert and the NCAA.
Either way, I say we applaud the effort coming out of Indianapolis.

We should all vote for the one that looks like a -OREGON STATE MASCOT-

Basso Profondo's picture

Logo 2 is now in the lead with 38% of the vote.  Did anyone see the report that an IP from Texas cast 50,000 votes for logo 4? What on earth? Apparently this is a big deal to some.

That is what happens when you leave it up to the Internet to vote... they are lucky if they don't end up with a cat with the saying "can i haz dis football"

AndyVance's picture

You mean... like this?

AJW_16's picture

I want this painted on the 50 yard line of the NCG.

"Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you."

buckeyedude's picture

ROFL! No, that kitty should be in both end zones, instead of the team names. Good times!

hodge's picture

In the true lolcat fashion, it should read "I can haz football?"

AJW_16's picture

"I can haz crystul football?"

I like #1 - reminds me of 'merica.

Lets hope the logo has a little more pizzaz than the name "College Football Playoff" which to me sounds like just about the dullest thing they could have named it
