You're One Classy Guy, Deshaun Thomas

Ohio State's student newspaper The Lantern received a letter to the editor from none other than Deshaun Thomas. His message? Essentially "I'm surrounded by winners and they need love, too."

Thomas points out that while it's a privilege to play for Ohio State, there are plenty of other elite athletes in Buckeye sports that do not get the publicity of football and men's basketball.

I know that athletes in other sports that do not get much press coverage are also winning championships. Just two weekends ago, Logan Stieber won his second-consecutive national championship in his weight class in wrestling, and senior Marco Canevari marked the Scarlet and Gray’s single individual champion title in fencing by securing the gold medal in men’s epee on March 22. A day later, gymnasts Sarah Miller and Aly Marohn captured the Big Ten championship on the balance beam.

And then he closes like a champ.

All athletes at Ohio State work very hard at being the best they can be at their sport. I wish that all athletes could receive the attention that our football and basketball teams get. They all deserve to be celebrated.

Deshaun Thomas
Third-year in sports management

Well done, sir.

Aww, Tank. You know, win or lose, these Matta teams have consistently been full of stand-up, decent guys.

Hovenaut's picture

That's a Buckeye right there.

Just as great as any on-court moment you've had, DT.

Way to be, Deshaun. What a classy and generous thing to say.

This shows how much he loves college and loves Ohio State. I'll remember that whether he is around next year or not. Sometimes it's about more than money, but sometimes it is about money and there is nothing wrong with that.
I hope all athletes come back and get their degrees even if they go pro early. DeShaun is a good kid with a good head on his shoulders. I think he has matured a lot since his freshmen and sophomore years. All the best to him and I'm glad he is a Buckeye.

Just when you think your starting to get a feel for what a person is all about you realize that there is
so much more to them. Thank you Deshaun for being here 3 years.

One of the classiest stars we've ever had, and we've had a lot.  He's always preached team recognition and gone above and beyond when it comes to mentioning other players after games and during interviews.  This letter is probably one of the coolest things I've seen an athlete do.
Whether he stays or leaves he is definitely one to remember, a true Buckeye.

To me this shows the growth of Deshaun more than anything. I don't know if he would write this letter his Freshman year but he has grown into a great man during his time at OSU. I think he has become a leader on and off the floor for Ohio State and I think any team would be wise to draft him both as a player and a person.

Craft to the Rafters's picture

agreed. can hardly recall another player who's shown so much maturation since his start at OSU

yrro's picture

I was going to say, that's one of the things I love about Matta teams. Watching players like Buford, Thomas, or Ross grow up and learn to play defense, pass the ball, and put the team first is pretty awesome.

d1145fresh's picture

Agree with what the others have said on some other players but this is the second part of why I think Matta is a great coach. Not only does he find success on the court but he creates players that Ohio State should be proud to have off the court.

i hope he comes back for his last year, not just for our sake, but for his as well.  great kid.

Well done Mr. Thomas.  Well done.

Wow. Not only a very classy, and just plain awesome thing to do, but also shows his sincere love for OSU. I'm going to not be surprised at all if he comes back...

Well done Deshaun.
FWIW: If Deshaun comes back, which I doubt happens, he will leave OSU as their all-time leading scorer. At the close of his junior year, he sits at 1630 points. Dennis Hopson's record is 2096. He only needs 467 points to take over the top spot. Thomas had 733 points this season.

I know it's been stated on here before, but don't think he's not aware of that little fact.

Well, that letter just gave me goosebumps. Good on you, Deshaun. You're a class act.
And congratulations to all those Buckeye Champions!

I hate when other people do this, but I'm going to be a hypocrite here:

It is a privilege to play for Ohio State

Anyone else want to over-analyze this....?

Alice in Aggieland's picture

Welp, he didn't say "It's been a privilege to play for Ohio State." Heh.

He's going to succeed at the next level (hopefully after one more year at OSU) because he's a grounded young man who is a class act.

If we don't get another year of seeing DT in a Buckeye's uni then good luck, you will always be loved by Buckeye Nation.

Such a great thing to read. To see the love he has for the school is just amazing. And for a man who is constantly in the lime light but wants others to be given the same attention is the sign of a very selfless, humble young man. Should he stay or go, it's been so great watching him grow up in front of us.

I love Deshaun. I absolutely do. And this is the kind of chracter he has.
One thing that I admire him for greatly is that he ended every interview he had after the game with "Thank you, Sir/Ma'am". He has his head on straight, that is for sure.
No matter if he comes back for another year, or bolts to the pros, he is an exceptional human being.

How many guys his age and with his ability do you think would have the heart to say something like that? Most people his age are more concerned with drugs and money than anything else. Deshaun is most certainly a fantastic kid who really sets a good example for anybody, not just college kids. Class act.

chimes3899's picture

What a class act. Love seeing how much he has grown up in the past few years. He has a bright future and a good head on his shoulders. Hopefully that future includes 1 more year at Ohio State but if not it has been a great 3 years

That is just classy as a motha right there.

In his 3 years at OSU, Deshaun has undergone one of the biggest transformations of any athlete I've encountered.  Best of luck to him no matter where he's playing ball next year.

Way to spread the love, D.  Great to have a stand-up guy like this on the team.  I agree with you, CHIMES, we have been able to watch him grow up.

How could anyone not love this kid!

xFactor11's picture

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about DeShaun. Originally I didn't like him very much because he seemed to be all about him and whined a lot. After learning a lot more about him and watching him grow I have nothing but the upmost respect for him. The more I learn about him the more I respect him. Whatever his future includes I will be rooting for him.

A classy guy, a great person and an excellent role model for his kid......Way to go Deshaun!

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

Now I hope, more than ever, that he returns next season. Just when I thought there wasn't another guy on the team just as classy/cool as Aaron Craft.....
Even though they just lost...... DAMN I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!

LadyBuck's picture

You have to admit that it's impressive when Matta can not only win, but win consistently, with people who are all gifted on the court and respectful off the court. They say the team reflects the coach, and this shows someone who values leadership, respect, and integrity first and foremost. It is an honor to have him as our coach.
Great job DT, and you have definitely grown on me.
