Sunday Skull Session

Good mornin'.

It's Sunday morning in America again. The Super Bowl is just seven days away, which means there are only seven days for ESPN to ask out loud if Tim Tebow could have led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship.

Meanwhile, there are sufficient doin's a-transpirin' with respect to the world of Ohio State sports that merit a Sunday Skull Session like this.

So, on with it.

DERRICK GREEN COMMITS TO THE MITTEN STATE TEAM. Odd that the first item of the day involves Michigan recruiting, but it's a fairly noteworthy event.

On Saturday, Derrick Green announced a verbal commitment to play for the Wolverines this fall, capping a recruiting process that seemed likely to end with a commitment to Michigan as things neared conclusion.

However, Green's story is a little more nuanced than that. He was long thought to be a favorite for an Ohio State pledge. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia, a Buckeye fan and has always fancied himself as a B1G TEN tailback. He wears #27 in honor of Eddie George, his inspiration for football. He also had an Ohio State offer, so what happened?

A lot of things, actually.

Ohio State already has a small army of running backs, with Carlos Hyde returning for his senior season and Jordan Hall receiving a medical redshirt to return to action in 2013. Beyond that, Ohio State has Rod Smith, Warren Ball, and Bri'onte Dunn, in addition to Ezekiel Elliott in the 2013 recruiting class. Elliott committed first and Taivon Jacobs may have taken Green's spot as Ohio State shifted gears towards other needs.

That Ohio State is getting docked another three scholarships this year means Urban Meyer is sort of precluded from taking fliers on prospects that don't address core needs for the roster. Undaunted, Green will get his wish to play in the B1G TEN and add his name to the rivalry, only wearing sun and blue in lieu of scarlet and gray.

Green's commitment makes him the jewel of Michigan's recruiting class and may solidify Hoke's class as best in the conference, if you care about that sort of thing (you shouldn't). Beyond the highest profile recruit in their class, he'll help address a glaring deficiency for next year's roster at tailback. Really, those carries next year could be all his if he pans out. He and the emergence of Devin Gardner will help soften some of the attrition from last year's team, especially its offense.

DECOMMITMENTS ELSEWHERE IN THE B1G TEN. In my piece on Iowa football that aired Tuesday, I suggested that Iowa's problems are really par for the course for the rest of the conference. In large part, no one in the conference is recruiting on the level of Ohio State or Michigan. In fact, some key players from recruiting classes elsewhere in the B1G TEN have jumped ship.

Earlier this week, Nate Andrews, a cornerback prospect from Fairhope, Alabama, flipped to Florida State from his previous pledge to Minnesota. It was a noteworthy defection too. Andrews is a 3-star prospect, but was maybe the best Jerry Kill had in his recruiting class. Importantly, the Gophers are losing both starting corners from last year's squad, which may have been the strength of the entire defense. Andrews could have played right away, but felt the need to flip to something closer to home. It leaves the Gophers with 14 scholarship players to be added on signing day, which is battling Purdue for worst in the league.

More recently, new conference mate Nebrasky lost a wide receiver prospect, who decommitted to Auburn. As noted in the Buckshot, it did not go well either.

So, really, we're returning back to the observation that no one is really recruiting on par with Ohio State or Michigan at the moment. Speaking of which, one of the other jewels of Michigan's recruiting class, Henry Poggi, took a visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend. This weekend, his father and high school football coach put Big Ten recruiting on blast, sparing Ohio State and... no, that's it. Just Ohio State. Brady Hoke must be thrilled with that.

James ClarkUrban Meyer is making a pitch to James Clark.

IMPORTANT RECRUITING WEEKEND FOR OHIO STATE. In Ohio State news, Urban Meyer and company are essentially finished with the 2013 recruiting class. There might be two more additions at the most. Other core needs have been satisfied, with one glaring exception: wide receiver.

In particular, Ohio State really needs a "slot" guy at the "H receiver" in Meyer's offense. Nowadays, we commonly think of this as "the Percy position", which I think was also the collection of B-sides to Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle.

Maybe priority #1 right now for Ohio State at that position is James Clark, who visited over the weekend. The recruiting crew at Eleven Warriors will keep you up to date on what to expect from a guy like Clark as signing day approaches, but James Clark himself essentially live tweeted his official visit. You can get a glimpse of how he saw things.

The other visit was Dontre Wilson, who is also being given a look at that H receiver position for Ohio State. He was apparently being chauffeured by early enrollee JT Barrett, a quarterback from Wichita Falls, Texas.

If you follow Ohio State's assistants on Twitter, you can probably read between the lines to determine the staff was happy with Barrett's pitch to the visitors. According to our own Alex, the visit was going well.

Elsewhere, Ohio State commit Ezekiel Elliott took an official visit to Missouri this weekend. During the Tigers' basketball game against Vanderbilt, he was serenaded with chants of "M-I-Z, E-Z-E". For what it's worth, it sounds a lot like a courtesy visit. Buckeye fans should not worry.

MISCELLANY. The Senior Bowl was played yesterday. You probably didn't watch it, which is understandable since John Simon and Reid Fragel had to bow out of the game due to injuries. The South squad beat the North, 21-16...  Derek Dooley landed with the Cowboys as a wide receiver coach... Dick Vitale and The Schwab hit up the club.

Look, I am trying to do everything better than Bama today (like every day).  That includes commenting on the interwebz.  Since I'm fairly hung over and have nothing witty to say, here's the best gif I know of...

I realize there aren't a lot of women here, but could you just link this instead?  I read this at home  and while I am not at work today, this would certainly get me in serious troubleif I viewed it at work.

Hahaha...some people with b!tch about anything.  This is PG13 material, at worst.
I'm sure you're not paid to surf the web either.

Seconded.  I am at work, sadly, and as much as I enjoy the gif, I probably shouldn't be enjoying it at work.

For me, "NSFW" means "not safe for the wife" (and kids).
I view 11 Warriors in my living room where the wife and kids can easily see what I'm looking at when they walk by.  While I agree that the gif is merely PG13, my kids are only 6...

Why is it that when a very simple request is made, with clear rationale (repeatedly), we have to react like its the next closest thing to the end of the world?  Would a little bit of compromise and selflessness kill?  I just don't understand. The why doesn't even matter. We're all here for the same reason, same team - brothers from different mothers. Can't we all just get along?  You don't like it?  Sure, fine.  I'm not going to stop what I'm doing but ill be considerate of your position and post a link.  Is it that hard? Does the extra click hurt that much?

Not sure why that requires down votes but I get where you're coming from.

Thanks for the updates! Can't wait to hear how this weekends visits went!!

A skull session that includes news about Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Michigan again before an Ohio State update?! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I kid of course, I appreciate the broad coverage, always good to know what's going on with the folks in the other half of the conference. But how about a shout out (or at least a mention) for the Basketball bucks getting a W yesterday

PhillyBuckeye27's picture

Demographics and mediocre coaching are working against the Big Ten!  The coaching can change by these schools opening up their checkbooks but the demographics thing will be harder to address.  It will be super pathetic that pretty kitty u (PSU) will be the third best team in the conference for recruiting - and they are on the death penalty!!!!!
Lets hope that college football is NOT going the way of college baseball - most the talent plays in warmer climates - and since its currently 20 degrees outside can you blame them???  But our Bucks, scUM, ND and MAYBE psu are all the north can hang their hats on w/ respect to football (and I can accept an argument for Neb but just barely).
Next decade will be very interesting.

RedStorm45's picture

If EZE is our "only" RB this class, and we need a slot WR, where is Jalin Marshall going to play?
Odd we would stop recruiting the #1 RB in the country, but in addition to all the reasons listed above he's not quite a "spread" back but no one thought Hyde was either.
Poggi's dad's twitter account...14 tweets and 92 followers.  Might be someone messing around, who knows.

osu07asu10's picture

I think at Ohio State, Urban has shown he really isn't going to participate in drawn out public recruiting battles . Davonte Neal was the first. Robert Foster and Shelton Gibson come to mind as far as very skilled players Urban didn't appear ready to take a flier on.
Now, Green doesn't have Daddy issues or character issues but we were his clear cut leader when Fickell was running the show and when UFM came aboard, I believe he recruited Green, possibly looking for a commitment, and Green wanted to enjoy the process and take it down to the wire.

Given our RB situation, the type of player  Green is v. the offense we run (although I agree with you on Hyde), and the fact that Green wasn't willing to commit; I think that the staff had higher targets on the board and they decided to pursue them instead.
It almost feels like the perfect storm for maybe not getting a skilled player we should have. Oh well, best of luck to him.

I don't think Diggs was a drawn out recruitment or had questions w character or Dad, he unfortunately just choose the terps over us if I remember?

osu07asu10's picture

The B1G TEN?
Vico, are you subliminally telling us you know something about conference expansion, and it is going to include a 20 team conference?!
Also only two more commits, at most? I thought it was general consensus that we have 3 definite spots, with the door always open for Vonn Bell? I think we take ATLEAST two more, an OL (most likely Skipper) and a WR (Clark or Timmons, or another UFM secret). Then we have Bell and Wilson as fliers I believe.

Buckologist's picture

Thanks for the update. A couple of things - it seemed everyone was saying we had 2 to 3 more spots available and that was before Crowell and O'Connor left the program. So do we not have 4 to 5 spots available now?

Also, ESPN has michigan's class at #6 and ours at #4 and that appears to be updated to include Green's commitment. Of course there are a bunch of different ranking services with vastly different rankings so it really doesn't mean much like you mentioned.

Buckeye_in_SEC_country's picture

Great write up... Gotta disagree on the OSU recruiting tho. I think we are full at recruiting the "Percy Harvin role" with Marshall, Jacobs, and Zeke.  I think the staff needs a pure WR or 2.

osu07asu10's picture

Wilson is being recruited for the "Percy Harvin role" if for nothing else to not upset Eze, semantics.

"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick

Buckeye_in_SEC_country's picture

Not really sure why we need 3 guys in that role in 1 class unless the redshirt for Jacobs is already a done deal.

osu07asu10's picture

Urban has stated numerous times he does not recruit freshman to redshirt, there is no "automatic" redshirt for Jacobs. Just because he is not rated a high as the other two doesn't mean he won't be successful or won't play right away.
We need 3 guys because currently, our staff doesn't believe we have the type of players needed to fill that position. As we saw with RB this year, injuries happen. Also, not every player pans out in accordance with their recruiting ranking, ie Curtis Grant.
Right now we only have 2 real "Percy Harvin" role players in Jacobs and Marshall. EzE is 215 lbs right now and he is being recruited as our RB.
I am all for adding Wilson to shore  up both the PH role and also give even more depth at RB.
I'm also fine with the staff taking Timmons or another PH type player because it is obviously what they feel we need.

"They don't know what they don't know." - Coach Mick

yankeescum's picture

I don't think that Jacobs's lateral movement is on par with what we are expecting from the "Percy Position".  I think that he is a pure wideout.  His speed seems to be really good, but I don't think that he has the wiggle to be the slot guy / backfield threat.  Marshall, Wilson and Timmons all seem like possible guys for that role.

Completely random comment, but whenever people would say RDS, I always thought it was an abbreviation for "Ryan Damn Shazier"...cause he's a badass and all.
Through getting caught up on twitter because of the whole JT link, and seeing his account, I now know the actual reason. Regardless,  I like to think I like mine better, and I'm going to act ignorant.

In regards to RDS, of course those are his initials he is a B.A.
And in regards to your second statement, what are you talking about?

LOL @ Hovenaut. Thankfully, God is an obvious Buckeye fan.

It's really very simple. What was most important to Green in not where he plays but how soon. TTUN needs him worse than the Buckeyes do. He'd be RB #5 if he came to C-bus, and he knows it. Maybe V. Smith can mentor him on how to get steamrolled gracefully.
(if I knew how to embed video, this is where I'd put everyone's favorite hit by Jadeveon Clowney>>>>V. Smith)

osu07asu10's picture

lol, Derrick needs to work on his dreads if he wants to maximize getting steamrolled.
I do think it is odd that Green is the 3rd RB to join scUMs class. I wonder if Shallman or Smith decommit here in the next week? If it is true that Green wanted to play right away, Hoke must have promised him the buffet and then some if he joined a class with 2 RBs already verbaled.

If the school orchestrated the M-I-Z-E-Z-E chant, that is an NCAA violation. You cannot openly recognize a recruit on a visit.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

osu07asu10's picture

Even if they did, it's a secondary violation along the lines of Gene Smith making a video specific to a certain recruit, we self report more secondary violations than any program in the country. Not a big deal.
