Urban Adds Bill Sheridan to OSU Staff

The Lantern is reporting that Urban Meyer has added former Miami Dolphins assistant Bill Sheridan to his coaching staff. Sheridan would be the ninth new staff-related hire Meyer has made since assuming the head coaching position at Ohio State.

Sheridan is a likely a replacement for Taver Johnson, the Buckeyes' former DB coach who recently left the staff to join Paul Haynes at Arkansas.

His collegiate coaching stops include Notre Dame, Michigan State, Army and Cincinnati. Sheridan also coached under Lloyd Carr at Michigan for three years and was on his staff during the Wolverines' sole Tressel-era victory over Ohio State in 2003. /trollgaze

Sheridan is also the father of former Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan, who battled Steven Threet for the Wolverines' starting position in 2008 before both players ended up transferring.

This is a surprise hire given he has mostly focused on LBs in the past.

That would've been great, but that was never going to happen. Sheridan has been a LB coach most of his career, but he was the DB coach under Saban at MSU, so this guy probably knows what he's doing.

I am just glad we got someone who is now (hopefully, pending confirmation) focused on DB's and the recruits can see that they have a position coach.

Oh god, Nick Sheridan. He makes JB look like an All-American.

Hopefully Bill Sheridan is as much of a curse to Michigan as his son was.

I don't think I've ever read the line "The Lantern is reporting..." in a gray box.

Hoping to see the next gray box read something like 'Armani Reeves has committed to Ohio State...'

Okay, I am freaking out a bit.

We don't have diverse expertise on our defensive coaching staff; all four defensive coahes are primarily LB coahes.

I was under the impression that Withers was more of a DBs coach. Plus Vrabel did play on the Dline in college and you really can't say he's an LB coach after one season.

I'm guessing Sheridan might coach Safeties allowing Withers to focus on CBs.

He has pro coaching experience and was even an NFL defensive coordinator.  I think that professional experience will resonate with any young defensive player.  My sense would be that a defensive recruit (Reeves, Cox or Neal) would really place value on being coached by someone who has been around the NFL.

I like this hire.

I agree with Johnny - I think Urban made this hire specifically because of the NFL experience.

I believe that tSUN has been filling Reeves' head with everything about Mattison being with the Ravens, etc. etc. etc. .... now we have a coach with some solid NFL credentials.

It seems that's all tSUN has to go on, though. They obviously can't match tOSU head-to-head when it comes to the actual head coach.

But, for the record, if you really want to talk about which team has a better shot of sending a DB to the league --- it's not even close. OSU has 11-13 DBs in the NFL...nobody's sent more DBs to the NFL in the past 15 years. No contest there between OSU and Michigan.

Maybe this is why our WRs in the NFL have sort of underwhelmed in recent years, aside from Holmes when he was with the steelers and early on his Jet career.

The association with Nick Sheridan is just scary.

I do miss Nick Sheridan being under center for TSUN. That was an entertaining season.

Not to mention Mike Doss (Indy), Shaun Springs (Sea) and probably others I've missed as well.
