Fickell Promoted To Assistant Head Coach

By Jason Priestas on March 30, 2011 at 12:39p

Looks like we have our answer as to who will be handling the coaching duties during Tressel's absence. From a school release:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Luke Fickell has been promoted to assistant head coach for Ohio State football, Gene Smith, associate vice president and director of athletics, announced today. In that role, he will serve as interim head coach for the first five games of the Buckeyes’ 2011 season. He will also retain his role as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

“Luke Fickell is a Buckeye to the core. He has earned this promotion to assistant head coach through his hard work, dedication and performance,” said Smith. “ We have great trust and belief in Luke’s ability to work with our entire coaching staff to lead our young men through the first five games this fall. I have confidence our entire football family will work together to maintain our standard of excellence.”

Fickell is in his 10th year on the Ohio State coaching staff. He coaches the Buckeyes linebackers and is co-defensive coordinator, a role he assumed in April, 2005. In 2010, he was selected as the AFCA’s Assistant Coach of the Year for FBS schools, and was also named Linebacker Coach of the Year by Football Scoop.

“I am honored to be able to grow at a place and in a program that I know, love and respect. It is extremely humbling,” said Fickell.

YES!!!!     I was hoping that Luke was going to be the man after the curtain fell on Tressel.  Looks like Tressels numbskullery has just accelerated the Fickels ascent

It's nice to see some good news for a change. Coach Fickell more than deserves this opportunity.

Now if we could only get Hazell back for play-calling.

Long live the southend.

Even a DC can run Dave. ;)

Anyone know if the 1pm presser is being shown live anywhere on the web?

Pls advise re: Fickell's 'and so forth' count.

don't know how many "and so forths" he's said, but he's used the phrase "the situation" about 600 times so far.

Luke Fickel's 'and so forth' count: 0

I heard JT say it once before my brain turned to pudding.

JT snuck at least one more in there is his second segment.

Can't believe this presser isn't on the fan...instead, the idiots are ramblin'.

Long live the southend.

Excellent.  Rittenberg's list of candidates had me crying in the fetal position.  Fickell's an excellent choice.  Guess we'll see how good he playcalls for the O.

I suspect Fickell will be the head coach a year from now. This is an excellent choice as Fickell has been the top motivator and recruter on staff. Plus, this eliminates some of the likelihood that he's picked as the newest coach in the MAC.

Because we couldn't go for three.

I think this is a major reason he was named the interim coach as well.  I am not sure Tressel ever walks the sidelines at the shoe again.

If Tressel never walks the sidelines again, expect Urban to be the next HC.  Fickell may be a rising name but he hasn't risen to the heights of HC at tOSU.  If JT leaves, I suspect Heacock and Bollman do, too.  So you may get to see Fickell as full fledged DC (no co-), depending on what shakes out with a new coach.  God Save the Vest.

Wish I could hear the questions the reporters are asking JT...

Man O man(as I'm shaking my head). It's amazing to me how quickly people have turned on this man.

And where does this "Urban Meyer" talk come from? Preposterous.

Tressel is no RichRod, and I believe the man deserves better. It seems to me even many OSU fans are Fickell  fickle.

The Urban Meyer talk is sprouting from the fact that he has reportedly bought a house in Columbus. His man Stan Drayton is already up in Columbus as well. Tressel is a great coach but I don't think he'll make it out of this ordeal with his job.
