Time and Change is a weekly series highlighting the history of some of Ohio State's storied traditions.

THEN

In 1932, under director Eugene Weigel, The Ohio State University Marching Band began memorizing their music. Weigel instituted a Saturday pregame rehearsal famously called a “Skull Session” which was known as the last opportunity for band members to learn the music.

At the time these rehearsals were closed to the public, but starting in 1957, Skull Sessions were relocated to St. John Arena and open to the public. This gave fans a chance to listen to the band and get excited for the day’s game in what I would describe as an atmosphere similar to a pep rally.

Starting in 2001, Coach Jim Tressel involved the football team in the tradition. Traveling from the Blackwell Hotel, Tressel and the team entered into St. John Arena to the tune of “Fanfare for a New Era” and would briefly address the fans in attendance.

The team then exits St. John Arena and makes the walk to Ohio Stadium with fans lining their path, hoping to get a high-five from one of their favorite players. For the rest of the Skull Session, the band gives a preview of the half-time performance and performs other fan favorites such as “Hang On Sloopy” and “The Navy Hymn.”

Unfortunately, there aren't many old pictures from Skull Sessions to share.

NOW

Both Urban Meyer and Ryan Day have continued the tradition of involving the football team in the Skull Session, making it a game day must for fans of all ages.

Some of my earliest memories of game days with my dad included Skull Sessions. There are only so many things to do around campus with a ten-year old when you arrive at least four hours before kickoff.

Skull Sessions begin two hours and twenty minutes before kickoff and seating is first-come, first-served. Today marks the last Skull Session for this season and it will begin promptly at 9:40 AM, leaving you plenty of time to get hyped and then head to the Shoe to cheer on the Buckeyes on Senior Day.
