Sherrone Moore is out after two seasons as Michigan’s head coach.

Michigan fired Sherrone Moore for cause on Wednesday after a university investigation found that Moore had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, according to a statement by Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel.

Associate head coach Biff Poggi has been appointed as Michigan’s interim head coach, effective immediately.

Moore’s firing ends a tumultuous two-year tenure as Michigan’s head coach in which he went just 16-8 after taking over the program from Jim Harbaugh, who left the Wolverines after winning the national championship in 2023 amid a university investigation into an impermissible scouting scandal orchestrated by former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions.

Moore was suspended for two games this season and was set to be suspended for the Wolverines’ season opener next year as a result of the program’s sanctions for the in-person scouting scandal.

His two-year tenure as Michigan’s head coach ends with a 27-9 loss to Ohio State, the Buckeyes’ first win over the Wolverines in The Game since 2019.

Despite that loss, there had been no indication that Michigan was looking to move on from Moore until Wednesday. His firing came just four days after Michigan hired former Ohio State assistant coach Kerry Coombs as its new special teams coordinator.

Moore – who has been married to his wife, Kelli, since 2015 – had been with the Wolverines since 2018, initially joining Harbaugh’s staff as tight ends coach. He became the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2021, and served as acting head coach when Harbaugh was suspended for three games in 2023 before he was promoted to the full-time head coaching job in 2024.
