It's local election day in the great state of Ohio. This isn't an excuse to launch a 3,000-word diatribe in the comments against your corrupt city councilman. Just go do your American duty and cast an informed ballot.

ICYMI:

Word of the Day: Sonder.

PENALTIES, AHOY! Penalties continued to plague Ohio State against Iowa. Unlike against Penn State; however, the Buckeyes didn't play well enough to overcome them.

But don't fret, fans! After years of asinine penalties, Urban Meyer has addressed the issue with the team and it's now fixed.

From Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch:

“There were a couple of devastating penalties that kept (Iowa) drives alive, and no excuse for them,” he said. “That’s something we’ve addressed. ... Those kind of games, you can’t have those.”

A targeting hit by Nick Bosa, who struck Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley helmet to helmet late in the second quarter, not only led to Bosa’s disqualification but also gave the Hawkeyes new life at the OSU 25-yard line with the score tied at 17. On the next play, Stanley threw one of his five touchdown passes, setting off a 31-0 scoring run.

“He came up, apologized,” Meyer said of Bosa. “It was unique. It wasn’t an open-field type thing. He was just lunging at the ball, is what he told me. There was no intent, is what he told me.”

This obviously isn't an issue that can be fixed in a week. If it were, we wouldn't be at this point. What has Meyer done other than tell his team, "This stuff is bad."?

I'd honestly love to know, because we've heard stuff like this for years, and it's only gotten worse.

SAN DIEGO IN DECEMBER? Just last week, we talked potential playoff match ups for the local team. Let's be thankful that didn't come to fruition, as I could not have handled watching Alabama bulldoze them in New Orleans.

But the show must still go on! Ohio State can still win the Big Ten and will play in a bowl. Some options are sexier than others.

From theozone.net:

The Buckeyes have played in a BCS or New Year’s Six bowl game in 10 of the last 12 seasons. One of the misses was the result of the other. The unbeaten 2012 team sat at home because of a bowl ban they served after opting to attend the Gator Bowl a year earlier, following “Tatgate.”

I want no part of UCF in the Peach Bowl. Ohio State has nothing to gain by playing that game. I refuse to believe the Citrus or Holiday Bowls are options, though it'd be hilarious to see Rich Rodriguez give a tougher game to Urban Meyer than Jim Harbaugh ever has.

However... beating Michigan, winning a Big Ten title, and thumping USC in the Rose Bowl would be a decent way to salvage the season.

THE FIVE-YEAR WAR. Ohio State opened as 15.5-point favorites against Michigan State, and I think multiple bookmakers went on a crack bender over the weekend. I've never bet against the local team in my life, but Michigan State and the points look like a layup.

These teams have almost played to a draw in the Mark Dantonio–Urban Meyer era.

From cleveland.com:

The aggregate score in the Five-Year War is Ohio State 121, Michigan State 120.

This game has 14-10 written all over it. All that's missing is a blinding snowstorm that Dantonio will undoubtedly conjure Saturday morning.

COME BACK, SHON. Why has Ohio State's secondary regressed this season? It's missing a guy like Marshon Lattimore.

Crazy to think Lattimore, Gareon Conley, and Malik Hooker all could be playing this year. If only.
