Ohio State women’s hockey earned its biggest win of the season on Saturday.
In its first of two road games this weekend against top-ranked Wisconsin, the No. 2 Buckeyes took down the No. 1 Badgers, 4-1, in Madison.
Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jordyn Petrie and Sloane Matthews. Maxine Cimoroni extended the lead to 3-0 in the second period. Kassidy Carmichael made it a 4-0 game in the third period before Ava Murphy scored Wisconsin’s only goal with less than three minutes to play.

It was the first win in three tries this season for Ohio State against Wisconsin, who beat the Buckeyes twice on their home ice in December. The Badgers also beat the Buckeyes in last year’s national championship game, defeating Ohio State 4-3 in overtime after a controversial call awarded a game-tying penalty shot to Wisconsin with just 18 seconds to play in regulation.
Both teams are currently without five of their top players, as the Buckeyes and Badgers each have five current players participating in the Winter Olympics. But even though Ohio State is currently without its top two scorers for the season (Joy Dunne and Hilda Svensson), the Buckeyes’ shorthanded roster dominated the Badgers’ shorthanded team in the first matchup this weekend.
The win was Nadine Muzerall’s 250th victory as Ohio State’s coach.
Women’s hockey was one of two Ohio State teams to earn a win over a No. 1-ranked opponent on Saturday, along with men’s tennis, which beat Virginia 5-2 in what was also a 1 vs. 2 matchup.
The top two teams in women’s college hockey will play again Sunday at 3 p.m. (B1G+).
