The 2025 Buckeyes took part in one of Ohio State football’s oldest traditions Tuesday, as coaches and players received Gold Pants for the team’s 27-9 win over Michigan in Ann Arbor.
No players on the roster had previously earned a pair, as the victory marked Ohio State’s first over the Wolverines since 2019. The six-year drought was the program’s longest since 1988–93, when John Cooper’s teams went 0-5-1 against Michigan.

“It’s for all the guys I’ve played with in the past that didn’t get a chance to get some of these,” fifth-year offensive lineman Carson Hinzman said Tuesday. “It’s pretty special to finally be able to get some. I’m proud of that.”
Ohio State’s Gold Pants tradition dates back to 1934, when head coach Francis Schmidt first awarded them after a 34-0 win over Michigan. In his first season with the Buckeyes following a successful five-year run at TCU, Schmidt told his players the Wolverines “put their pants on one leg at a time, same as everybody else.”
The win helped turn the tide in the rivalry, as Ohio State went on to win the next four meetings — two in Columbus and two in Ann Arbor.
