If the playoff field were set today, Ohio State would face either Oregon or Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.

Ohio State is 9-0 after 11 weeks of the 2025 college football season. The Buckeyes opened their season with a 14-7 win over No. 10 Texas, then ripped off wins over Grambling State, Ohio, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State and Purdue. The last of those victories occurred this past weekend, a 34-10 win over the Boilermakers.

In addition to the CFP, the Buckeyes are ranked No. 1 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll. They are also No. 1 in Bill Connelly's SP+ and ESPN's College Football Power Index. The latter metric states that Ohio State has the No. 3 strength of record behind Indiana and Texas A&M, and the No. 15 strength of schedule in the FBS. The team's remaining schedule — which includes UCLA, Rutgers and No. 18 Michigan — ranks No. 21 in the sport.

CFP selection committee chairman Mack Rhoades said there was a “clear consensus in the room” that Ohio State should be the No. 1 team this week.

“Felt like the most complete team,” Rhoades said on a media teleconference. “Really good defensively, particularly up front. Offensively, again, really good. Their offensive line play is outstanding. They have the great playmakers in Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. Quarterback (Julian) Sayin right now leads the country in passing efficiency and completion percentage. So those are all reasons why Ohio State, again, clear consensus for the committee for them to remain at number one.”
