Ohio State’s offense played its highest snap count of the season while its defense played its lowest snap count of the season at Purdue.

The Buckeyes snapped the ball 78 times on offense while their defense was on the field for just 47 snaps as Ohio State limited Purdue to 13 first downs and had more than 40 minutes of time of possession in its 34-10 win in West Lafayette.

As a result, 10 offensive Buckeyes played their highest snap counts of the season: Quarterback Julian Sayin, running back Isaiah West, wide receivers Brandon Inniss and Bryson Rodgers, tight end Max Klare and all five starting offensive linemen. Inniss, Rodgers and Klare all saw their roles increase against Purdue because Carnell Tate was held out of the game for precautionary reasons, while Moore made his first career start at right tackle in place of Phillip Daniels, who also missed the game due to injury.

Ohio State also had a lineup change on defense as Eddrick Houston returned to the starting lineup at defensive tackle and played his second-highest snap count of the season. Tywone Malone Jr. did not play against the Boilermakers even though he was not listed on Ohio State’s pregame injury report.

Below, we’ve compiled all of the offensive and defensive snap counts for Ohio State vs. Purdue, courtesy of Pro Football Focus, with some additional analysis from what we saw from the Buckeyes at each position group in West Lafayette. (Note: Special teams snap counts were not available on PFF as of Monday morning.)

Quarterbacks

Julian Sayin: 74
Lincoln Kienholz: 4

Kienholz played one snap with the first-team offense for the second time this season. The Buckeyes put Kienholz in the game on 3rd-and-goal late in the second quarter, and Ohio State’s No. 2 quarterback capitalized on the opportunity, running for a 3-yard touchdown.

Kienholz reentered for the game’s final three snaps as Ohio State took its starters out for its final possession.

Even with those substitutions, Sayin played a career-high 74 snaps. Sayin threw the ball on 33 of those snaps, completing 27 passes for 303 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

Running Backs

Bo Jackson: 25
Isaiah West: 20
James Peoples: 19
C.J. Donaldson: 14

With fellow freshman Jackson already established as Ohio State’s No. 1 running back, West was the first RB off the bench and played the second-most snaps among RBs against Purdue. The two freshmen were also Ohio State’s most effective runners in West Lafayette as Jackson ran for 75 yards on 14 carries and West rushed for 60 yards on nine attempts.

Donaldson played the fewest snaps among running backs against Purdue, with most of his snaps coming in short-yardage and goal-line situations, but he took advantage of his continued opportunities in scoring position as he ran for two 1-yard touchdowns.

Although he was the fourth running back to enter the game, Peoples played his highest snap count in Ohio State’s last four games against Purdue. He ran for 26 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for nine yards.

Wide Receivers

Jeremiah Smith: 59
Brandon Inniss: 52
Bryson Rodgers: 35
Mylan Graham: 14
David Adolph: 8

As Carnell Tate was held out of the game for precautionary reasons after feeling tightness during warmups, Inniss started opposite Smith as Ohio State’s No. 2 wide receiver against Purdue and played a career-high 52 snaps, catching three passes for 26 yards.

After playing just 19 offensive snaps in Ohio State’s first eight games of the season, Rodgers served as Ohio State’s No. 3 receiver in Tate’s absence and played 35 snaps, the second-highest total of his Buckeye career. He caught two passes for 30 yards.

Graham and Adolph also mixed in for playing time as Ohio State’s fourth and fifth receivers against Purdue, with Graham catching one pass for 20 yards. Quincy Porter did not play against Purdue after he was listed as questionable on the pregame status report.

Smith played the most snaps among receivers – as he has in every game but one this season – and caught a career-high 10 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.

Tight Ends

Will Kacmarek: 46
Max Klare: 42
Bennett Christian: 25
Nate Roberts: 18
Jelani Thurman: 10

For the second time this season, all of Ohio State’s top five tight ends played double-digit snaps, as they also did against Minnesota. Kacmarek and Klare were each on the field for more than half of Ohio State’s offensive plays, as the Buckeyes used multiple tight ends on a majority of their snaps with Tate out. Klare played his highest snap count so far as a Buckeye and caught five passes for 59 yards against his former team.

Christian and Roberts both played their second-highest snap counts of the season. Roberts caught two passes for six yards and also had a goal-line rushing attempt, which was stuffed for no gain.

Offensive Linemen

Austin Siereveld: 75
Luke Montgomery: 75
Carson Hinzman: 75
Ian Moore: 66
Tegra Tshabola: 65
Gabe VanSickle: 13
Ethan Onianwa: 12
Justin Terry: 6
Carter Lowe: 3
Isaiah Kema: 3

Moore made his first career start in place of Phillip Daniels, who did not play against Purdue after he was listed as questionable on the pregame status report. Moore played a career-high 66 snaps as he was Ohio State’s right tackle for all but two possessions. Onianwa replaced Moore at RT for the Buckeyes’ fourth drive of the game, while Terry took over at RT for Ohio State’s final possession.

Tshabola was substituted out of the lineup for Ohio State’s third drive of the game as he has been throughout the season. With Joshua Padilla sidelined by injury, VanSickle played the role of rotational RG for the Buckeyes’ third possession, while he finished the game at LG with the second-team offensive line. Tshabola still played a career-high 65 snaps.

Siereveld, Montgomery and Hinzman played every snap of the game at left tackle, left guard and center until Ohio State’s final possession, resulting in new career-high snap counts for Siereveld and Montgomery.

The Buckeyes’ second-team offensive line for its final three plays consisted of Lowe at LT, VanSickle at LG, Kema at C, Onianwa at RG and Terry at RT. Terry also played three goal-line snaps with the first-team offense as a sixth offensive lineman as the Buckeyes used their “Bison” package for the first time all season.

Defensive Ends

Caden Curry: 34
Kenyatta Jackson Jr.: 32
Zion Grady: 15
Beau Atkinson: 9
Joshua Mickens: 5

Curry played all but three snaps while Jackson played all but five snaps until Ohio State’s final defensive series of the game. Jackson recorded two tackles while Curry made one.

Grady played a season-high 15 snaps as he played more snaps than Atkinson for the first time all season as Ohio State’s top backup defensive end. Grady recorded two tackles.

Mickens played his only five snaps of the game as Ohio State’s No. 5 defensive end on Purdue’s final drive of the day.

Defensive Tackles

Eddrick Houston: 27
Kayden McDonald: 22
Will Smith Jr.: 15
Jason Moore: 10
Jarquez Carter: 4

Houston played his highest snap count since the Buckeyes’ season opener against Texas and made his first start since Ohio State’s first two games of the season. Tywone Malone Jr., who had started Ohio State’s previous six games at 3-technique, did not play against Purdue even though he wasn’t listed on the pregame status report.

McDonald played his lowest snap count of conference play but still earned Ohio State’s defensive player of the game award as he recorded four tackles with one tackle for loss in just 22 snaps.

Moore served as Ohio State’s No. 2 3-technique in Malone’s absence and recorded the first tackle for loss of his Buckeye career.

Linebackers

Sonny Styles: 35
Arvell Reese: 32
Payton Pierce: 23
Riley Pettijohn: 11
TJ Alford: 5
Garrett Stover: 1

Styles played all but two snaps while Reese played all but five snaps with the first-team defense against Purdue. Styles recorded five tackles with a pass breakup while Reese made one tackle for loss.

Pierce joined Styles and Reese on the field in 3-3-5 packages, in addition to rotating in for them occasionally and staying in for Purdue’s final possession with the second-team defense. He recorded a team-high seven tackles, including tackles on five straight plays on Purdue’s last drive.

Pettijohn also mixed in with the first-team defense this season in addition to finishing out the game with the second unit. He recorded two tackles.

Third-string linebackers Alford and Stover played their only snaps of the game on Purdue’s final drive. Neither recorded a tackle.

Cornerbacks

Jermaine Mathews Jr.: 37
Davison Igbinosun: 36
Devin Sanchez: 16
Aaron Scott Jr.: 10
Bryce West: 7

Mathews played every snap with the first-team defense and recorded the Buckeyes’ only takeaway of the game on a second-quarter interception. Igbinosun played all but one snap with the first-team defense and allowed just two catches for 13 yards with one pass breakup and one pass interference penalty on seven targets.

Sanchez saw occasional action with the first-team defense as a sixth defensive back in dime packages before finishing out the game opposite Scott at outside cornerback on Purdue’s final possession. Scott and West played their only snaps of the game on Purdue’s final drive, with West lining up at slot cornerback.

Safeties

Caleb Downs: 37
Jaylen McClain: 37
Lorenzo Styles Jr.: 37
Faheem Delane: 10
Leroy Roker III: 10

Styles played every snap with the first-team defense alongside Downs and McClain as Ohio State had at least five defensive backs on the field for every play until its final defensive series. While the Buckeyes had substituted Styles out of the lineup in three-linebacker packages in previous games, Ohio State used a 3-3-5 personnel package instead of a 4-3 package against Purdue.

Roker finished out the game at free safety with Delane at strong safety for Purdue’s 10-play final possession.
