One of Ohio State’s biggest NFL stars is done for the season.

Former Buckeye defensive end Nick Bosa had his season come to an abrupt end on Sunday as he tore the ACL in his right knee in the San Francisco 49ers’ win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Bosa was able to walk back to the locker room under his own power after suffering the injury, leaving optimism that he had avoided serious injury, but Bosa expressed concerns about a potential ACL tear to the team and gave a thumbs down to someone in the crowd on his way back to the locker room.

Bosa had reason to know the potential severity of the injury, as it’s now the third time in his football career that he’s suffered a torn ACL. He previously tore the ACL in his right knee during his senior year of high school, then tore the ACL in his left knee during his second NFL season in 2020.

Bosa’s Ohio State career was also cut short by injury when he suffered a core-muscle injury during the Buckeyes’ third game of the 2018 season, after which he opted to withdraw from school to rehab his injury and prepare for the 2019 NFL draft.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Bosa looked to be well on his way to another standout season before Sunday’s injury. In the 49ers’ first two games of the year, Bosa recorded 15 total tackles – including a career-high nine total tackles in the 49ers’ Week 2 win over the Saints – with four tackles for loss, two sacks and nine quarterback pressures.

Now, however, Bosa finds himself sidelined by a season-ending injury for the second time in seven NFL seasons.

Bosa was one of two former Ohio State players in the NFL to suffer a season-ending knee injury in Week 3. Former Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones will also miss the rest of the season with a knee injury he suffered in the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Green Bay Packers, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday.
