Mike Vrabel’s tenure with the Tennessee Titans is over after six seasons.

The Titans fired Vrabel on Tuesday after going 6-11 in 2023.

It’s a surprisingly unceremonious end to a tenure in Tennessee that was highlighted by Vrabel winning NFL Coach of the Year honors after leading the Titans to a 12-5 record in 2021. The Titans earned three straight playoff berths from 2019-21, his second through fourth years on the job, but went just 13-21 in his final two seasons with the team.

Vrabel’s name has been a popular one among Ohio State fans as a potential future head coach of the Buckeyes, given his history as one of Ohio State’s all-time great defensive ends. The Buckeyes’ all-time sacks leader is the first former Ohio State player to be an NFL Coach of the Year, and he got his start in coaching at Ohio State, where he was an assistant coach from 2011-13 before joining the Houston Texans’ staff as an assistant coach.

That said, it’s more likely Vrabel will continue his coaching career as the head coach of another NFL team, as he’s expected to receive immediate interest from other teams making coaching changes. One potential landing spot could be the New England Patriots, the team he played most of his NFL career with, if they decide to move on from longtime head coach Bill Belichick after going 4-13 in 2023.
