Ohio State had one of its most dominant performances of the first half of the season in its 41-7 win over Purdue on Saturday, and the Buckeyes’ backups got more opportunities to play as a result.

Even while the game was still on the line, numerous backups played bigger roles than they had all season against Purdue. The headliner among them was Dallan Hayden, who ended up playing most of the game at running back after playing only three snaps in Ohio State’s first five games of the season. Gee Scott Jr., Cody Simon and Jordan Hancock were among the other Buckeyes who also played season-high snap counts off the bench. Devin Brown saw first-half action at quarterback for the first time since the first two games of the season as the Buckeyes introduced a new red-zone package that brought Brown into the game in place of Kyle McCord.

Xavier Johnson, who is usually a backup, made his first career start in place of Emeka Egbuka at wide receiver and played a season-high 26 snaps in West Lafayette.

In total, 62 of the 74 Ohio State players who made the trip to Purdue saw playing time against the Boilermakers. The second-highest total of Buckeyes to play in a game so far this season included 29 players who got in on offense, 28 players who got in on defense and just six players who played only on special teams, with Caden Curry playing snaps at both fullback and defensive end for the third game in a row.

We’ve compiled how many snaps every Buckeye played in each phase of the game with a look at how Ohio State deployed its players at each position below. Pro Football Focus’ premium statistics were used for offensive and defensive snap counts – with a couple of adjustments made to account for discrepancies we found – while special teams snap counts were compiled by Eleven Warriors researcher Matt Gutridge. All snap counts should be considered unofficial as they were not provided by Ohio State.

Quarterbacks

Kyle McCord: 60
Devin Brown: 12

Brown saw his first action in three games and his first action before halftime in four games as Ohio State introduced a new red-zone package led by the backup quarterback against Purdue. Brown played at least one snap on each of Ohio State’s second, third and fourth possessions of the game, most successfully on the Buckeyes’ second drive, when he converted a 3rd-and-1 with an 8-yard run and ran for a 2-yard touchdown two plays later.

Brown returned to the field to lead Ohio State’s final two drives of the fourth quarter. On the first of those two drives, Brown’s only pass completion of the day went for a 58-yard touchdown on a deep ball to Brandon Inniss.

Running Backs

Dallan Hayden: 45
Chip Trayanum: 17
Evan Pryor: 9

With TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams both sidelined for the game by injuries, Trayanum started against Purdue and was on the field for all of Ohio State’s first 17 offensive plays until he took a big hit at the end of a 9-yard catch and left the game with an injury of his own.

Hayden, who had not played since the season opener at Indiana with Ohio State looking at potentially redshirting him this season, entered the game at running back when Trayanum exited. He went on to play 45 of Ohio State’s remaining 55 offensive plays, carrying the ball 11 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Pryor was in the game for a trio of three-play drives in the second half, running the ball three times for a net total of two yards.

Fullbacks

Caden Curry: 3

Curry saw action as a fullback for the third game in a row against Purdue, playing multiple snaps on offense for the first time as he was on the field for three offensive plays in West Lafayette. On his first offensive play in the game, Curry helped push McCord across the first-down line on a 3rd-and-1 quarterback sneak. His latter two snaps at fullback came at the end of the opening drive of the third quarter with Hayden running behind Curry for a 1-yard touchdown to conclude the drive.

Wide Receivers

Julian Fleming: 61
Marvin Harrison Jr.: 52
Xavier Johnson: 26
Carnell Tate: 26
Jayden Ballard: 6
Brandon Inniss: 6
David Adolph: 3
Noah Rogers: 3
Bryson Rodgers: 3

Fleming played his highest snap count of the season to date against Purdue as he was on the field for all but 11 of Ohio State’s offensive plays. He played the most snaps among Ohio State wide receivers for the second time this season as Fleming was the only wide receiver on the field in one-receiver packages and Harrison was not on the field for any of Brown’s snaps.

Johnson made the first start of his career at slot receiver in place of Emeka Egbuka – who missed the game due to the ankle injury he suffered against Maryland – and played a season-high 26 snaps.

His versatility was also on display against Purdue. He lined up or motioned into the backfield at points, running the ball five times for 39 yards, while he also occasionally lined up as a tight end in red-zone situations.

Tate rotated with Johnson throughout the game and played his highest single-game snap count so far in his Ohio State career, catching three passes for 79 yards. Ballard and Inniss joined Tate on the field for a pair of possessions in the second half, one with McCord still in the game and one with Brown.

Adolph, Rogers and Rodgers were Brown’s wide receivers for Ohio State’s final possession with Rodgers playing the first three snaps of his Buckeye career.

Tight Ends

Cade Stover: 53
Gee Scott Jr.: 41
Patrick Gurd: 4
Jelani Thurman: 1

Scott set a new career-high in snaps for the second game in a row as he joined Stover on the field for 25 snaps in multi-tight end formations while also rotating in to play as a solo tight end more frequently than usual.

With Joe Royer sidelined by injury, Gurd joined Stover, Scott and Curry on the field for a pair of goal-line runs on the opening drive of the third quarter and also played two snaps on the Buckeyes’ final possession of the game. Thurman, in his second game appearance of the year, played his only snap on Ohio State’s final offensive play of the day.

Offensive Linemen

Josh Simmons: 69
Donovan Jackson: 69
Carson Hinzman: 69
Matt Jones: 69
Josh Fryar: 69
Luke Montgomery: 4
Zen Michalski: 3
Tegra Tshabola: 3
Victor Cutler Jr.: 3
Enokk Vimahi: 3
Jakob James: Special teams only

Simmons, Jackson, Hinzman, Jones and Fryar played all of the snaps with the first-team offensive line for the sixth game in a row to begin the season. All five of them played every snap until Ohio State’s final possession of the game, when they were replaced by the second-team offensive line of Michalski, Tshabola, Cutler, Vimahi and Montgomery.

Montgomery also joined the first-team offensive line on the field as a sixth offensive lineman for one 2nd-and-goal play in the first half. The play resulted in an incomplete pass, though Montgomery pancake-blocked a defender on the play.

Defensive Ends

Jack Sawyer: 43
JT Tuimoloau: 40
Caden Curry: 23
Kenyatta Jackson: 21
Mitchell Melton: 13
Omari Abor: 7

Sawyer played more snaps than Tuimoloau for the first time all season as Ohio State rotated its defensive ends more frequently against Purdue than it had in its previous two games. Curry and Jackson both matched their season-highs in playing time as they rotated in with the starters over the course of the game.

Melton saw action on Ohio State’s final defensive series of the first half as Jim Knowles deployed the Jack package for the first time this year, bringing in Melton as a standup rusher to play opposite Sawyer while moving Curry inside to defensive tackle to play alongside Mike Hall. Melton returned to the game to play additional snaps on each of Ohio State’s final three defensive series.

Abor played all seven of his snaps on Ohio State’s second-to-last defensive series of the game for his third game appearance of the year.

Defensive Tackles

Tyleik Williams: 41
Mike Hall: 39
Ty Hamilton: 15
Jaden McKenzie: 14
Hero Kanu: 12
Kayden McDonald: 12
Tywone Malone: 7

Hamilton played a season-low 15 snaps against Purdue as Hall started the game at nose tackle and was leaned on to play more than twice as many snaps as Hamilton, who had rotated more evenly with Hall earlier in the year. Williams played the most snaps among defensive tackles for the sixth game in a row to begin the year, though he played his lowest snap count since the first two games of the season as the Buckeyes didn’t need him to play extensively in the second half.

McKenzie played a season-high 14 snaps as Ohio State’s second-string 3-technique despite being listed as questionable on the pregame injury report. Malone, Kanu and McDonald played all of their snaps in the second half after the Buckeyes’ victory was comfortably in hand.

Linebackers

Tommy Eichenberg: 55
Cody Simon: 45
Steele Chambers: 32
C.J. Hicks: 11
Gabe Powers: 1
Reid Carrico: Special teams only

Simon played more than twice as many snaps against Purdue as he played in any of Ohio State’s first five games as he rotated with Chambers at Will linebacker throughout the game. While Chambers started the game at Will, he and Simon alternated series for most of the first three quarters before Simon moved to Mike linebacker for Ohio State’s first two defensive series of the fourth quarter.

Eichenberg played every defensive snap of the first three quarters before coming out of the game for the fourth quarter. Hicks played all of his 11 snaps at Will linebacker on Ohio State’s final two defensive series of the game. Powers checked in at Mike linebacker for the game’s final play for the first defensive snap of his collegiate career.

Cornerbacks

Davison Igbinosun: 61
Jordan Hancock: 54
Denzel Burke: 36
Jermaine Mathews Jr.: 25
Jyaire Brown: 11

Igbinosun played every snap at outside cornerback until Purdue’s final two possessions of the game. Burke played every snap of the first half opposite Igbinosun but left the game with an injury after Hancock appeared to make contact with his ankle while making a tackle on Purdue’s third offensive play of the second half.

Hancock spent most of the game rotating in with Sonny Styles to play slot cornerback but also played 11 snaps outside when Styles was on the field after Burke left the game. Mathews played the rest of the snaps in place of Burke for a total of 25 plays, four more than the total number of defensive snaps he played in Ohio State’s first five games.

Brown made his third game appearance of the year – and played exactly 11 snaps for the third time this year – as he replaced Igbinosun for Ohio State’s final two defensive series of the day.

Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. played 25 snaps at cornerback against Purdue after Denzel Burke left the game with an injury.

Safeties

Josh Proctor: 61
Lathan Ransom: 61
Sonny Styles: 30
Ja’Had Carter: 11
Malik Hartford: 11
Brenten “Inky” Jones: Special teams only

Proctor and Ransom were on the field for every defensive snap as Ohio State’s starting free safety and strong safety until Purdue’s final two possessions of the game, on which Hartford and Carter replaced them.

Styles made his sixth straight start at nickel safety to begin the year and was on the field for just under half of Ohio State’s 61 defensive plays. Hancock took his place in the lineup for the rest of those plays and also finished out the game at nickel safety with Ohio State’s second-team secondary.

With Trayanum knocked out of the game in the first quarter, Chambers took his place on the kickoff return unit. The rest of Ohio State’s kickoff return unit was unchanged from the Maryland game, though Gurd took Scott’s place on the field for Purdue’s second kickoff. Johnson returned both of Purdue’s kickoffs, gaining a combined 49 yards on the returns.

Punts

Jesse Mirco (punter): 4

With all of Ohio State’s punts also coming after Trayanum’s day ended, Carrico took Trayanum’s place on the punting unit. The rest of the punting unit was the same from Ohio State’s previous game, though Proctor and Mathews replaced Fleming at gunner for one of each of the Buckeyes’ final two punts while Curry and Melton took Eichenberg and Stover’s places for Mirco’s final boot of the day.

With usual punt returner Emeka Egbuka sidelined, Ballard handled returner duties for all seven of Purdue’s punts. He did not gain any yards on the only punt he attempted to return.

Adolph was a new addition to the punt block/return unit against Purdue, taking the place of Ja’Had Carter on that unit. Scott and Gurd split snaps on the punt block team, but the rest of the lineup remained consistent for the game with the exception of Purdue’s second-to-last punt of the day, for which the Buckeyes kept their defense on the field.
