Notre Dame football celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a special announcement on Friday.

When the Irish welcome Ohio State to South Bend, Indiana, for the second matchup of a home-and-home series with the Buckeyes on Sept. 23, the program will wear alternate green jerseys as part of a "Green Out" at Notre Dame Stadium.

According to Tyler Horka of On3, Notre Dame has fared well while wearing any green on their uniforms in the last 40 years, collecting a 10-6 record and wins in five consecutive contests dating back to a 45-21 road win over Maryland. The Irish most recently donned green jerseys in a home matchup with California last season and squeaked out a narrow 24-17 victory. It was the first time the program wore the alternates since the 2018 season.

One of the most memorable times Notre Dame wore green came in 1977 when then-head coach Dave Devine special ordered the alternate jerseys for a matchup with USC. In a contest now known as "The Green Jersey Game" by the University of Notre Dame's athletic website, future Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana's four-touchdown performance led the No. 11 Irish to a 49-19 upset win over the No. 5 Trojans.

Current head coach Marcus Freeman, transfer quarterback Sam Hartman and Notre Dame will look to accomplish a similar feat in 2023 as the program welcomes Ohio State to town on Sept. 23, a little over one year after the Buckeyes sent the Irish home with a 21-10 defeat in the 2022 season opener at Ohio Stadium.

As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook has Ohio State as a 10-point favorite over Notre Dame. The Buckeyes are also listed as 9.5-point favorites against Penn State, 21.5-point favorites against Michigan State and one-point underdogs against Michigan, according to the sportsbook's early lines for 2023.
