Rod Smith is back on an NFL roster, and he's staying in the NFC East.

The former Ohio State running back, who spent the past four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, signed with the New York Giants, the Giants announced on Wednesday.

Smith served as Ezekiel Elliott's primary backup with the Cowboys last season, but was effectively replaced when the Cowboys selected two running backs in this year's NFL draft, including fellow former Ohio State running back Mike Weber in the seventh round.

Over the past two seasons in Dallas, Smith had 99 carries for 359 yards and five touchdowns, along with 28 receptions for 262 yards and a touchdown.

Now, he'll have a chance to earn a roster spot in New York as a backup to the Giants' star running back, Saquon Barkley. He becomes the only former Ohio State player on the Giants' roster.
