The New York Football Giants open training camp this morning, and in an effort to create competition at the place kicker position, have signed former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent.

Nugent, 35, has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in 13 games with the Bengals last season — making 23 of 29 attempts — but was released on Dec. 13.

Nugent has made 236 of 292 field goal attempts (80.8%) and 344 of 355 extra point tries for 1,052 total career points, which ties him with Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith for 50th on the NFL’s career list. A Centerville native, he set 22 school records at Ohio State before he was picked by the Jets in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Nugent will compete for the job with Aldrick Rosas, who has never played in a regular-season game but had been the only kicker on the Giants’ roster. He was with the Tennessee Titans during training camp last year.
