Ohio State’s first recruiting camp of the summer had no shortage of premier talent on campus.
Buckeyes quarterback commit Brady Edmunds was among the stars of the day, with the California signal caller participating in his first of what will be three consecutive camp sessions with Ohio State.
“It felt really good just competing with the guys,” Edmunds said following the camp. “Moreso coaching coaching-wise, coach Day and coach (Billy) Fessler were with me every single rep talking through things and was getting pulled aside and getting some one-on-one coaching from coach Day. That was awesome.”
Five-star 2027 defensive tackle Jalen Brewster arrived in Columbus on Wednesday to tour the Buckeyes’ facilities and meet with Larry Johnson, but the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country also wanted to get some work in at the Buckeyes’ recruiting camp.

During individual drills, the Texas resident looked every bit as impressive as his billing with his 6-foot-3, 302-pound frame. He received his offer from Ohio State in April, but Brewster still wanted to work out with Johnson and showcase his skills anyway. It’s fair to say he should be a top priority for the Buckeyes in the 2027 cycle. If you need some context on just how athletic Brewster is, let me put it this way — Brewster occasionally played running back for his high school and scored four rushing touchdowns last season, in Texas high school football, at 6-foot-3, 302 pounds.
Another standout from camp was four-star 2027 linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield, who earned an offer from James Laurinaitis in March. Mayfield hails from North Carolina and is considered the No. 166 prospect and the No. 10 linebacker in the 2027 class per 247Sports’ composite rankings. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker with nearly 20 Division I offers showcased his raw athleticism, pass coverage and attention to detail in drills on Thursday.
“It was exciting, I love the way he coaches,” Mayfield told Eleven Warriors of the opportunity to work out with Laurinaitis. “I feel like I got better today. I definitely learned some stuff that I can take back home.”
Of course, some of the best moments at Ohio State’s recruiting camps are seeing campers earn offers from the Buckeyes following strong performances on the field. OSU extended four offers on Thursday to prospects from the 2027 and 2028 classes.
We’ll start local, considering Columbus resident Jordan Karhoff picked up an offer Thursday from Ryan Day and Keenan Bailey. Karhoff is a two-way standout for St. Francis De Sales, playing tight end and defensive end. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect will be a tight end at the next level, though. Karhoff is someone the Ohio State staff is very familiar with, considering the quarterback at St. Francis De Sales is RJ Day, the son of Ryan Day.

Two safeties from the 2027 class impressed Matt Guerrieri enough to earn an offer on Thursday, including four-star Eli Johnson and three-star Jonathan Galette. Johnson is a top-105 prospect in 2027 and is considered the eighth-best safety in the cycle. Ohio State was the 6-foot-3, 200-pound defensive back’s 22nd Division I offer. Last season, he recorded 68 tackles, three tackles for loss, a pass breakup, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and two interceptions.

Galette has a more modest composite rating at No. 426 overall, but the New Jersey prospect still showcased great potential at the camp Thursday. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Galette has nine Division I offers, including Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Penn State, Rutgers, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
The best wide receiver at camp was North Carolina 2028 wideout Braylon Clark, who earned his 17th Division I offer from Brian Hartline. From his route running to pass catching ability, Clark looked the part of a future standout in his class. As a freshman, he caught 38 passes for 578 yards and five touchdowns.

Other notes:
- Despite Edmunds being locked in with Ohio State, I think it’s possible the Buckeyes explore taking two quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle. There’s a good chunk of signal callers from that class expected to work out in front of Ryan Day and Billy Fessler over the next month, so we’ll see if any emerge as interesting options.
- Speaking of 2027 QBs, I thought three-star Georgia signal caller Derrick Baker threw the ball pretty well today.
- Four-star Ohio offensive tackle Kalel Johnson continues to be an intriguing option for the 2027 class. Johnson was offered by Tyler Bowen in the spring and grew up an OSU fan, so there’s definitely mutual interest here from both parties. He’s certainly got the height needed to thrive at offensive tackle, standing at 6-foot-7, but he’ll need to bulk up a little more to excel at the position, which he has plenty of time to do.
- He wasn’t offered on Thursday, but one interior offensive lineman I’ll be keeping an eye on in the future is four-star Iowa prospect Will Slagle. Slage performed well at camp and has plenty of Power Four offers already, so we’ll see what happens going forward.
