Finding the right fit for your college football program isn't just about what happens on the field, but off it as well. Today, Ohio State added a key piece. How will that commitment impact the Buckeyes?

Ohio State secured a pledge this afternoon from one of the best linebackers in the Midwest when Indianapolis, Indiana, Cathedral four-star Pete Werner commitment to the Buckeyes.

Let's take a look at what Werner — the second-best player in the state and the No. 17 outside linebacker in the Class of 2017 — brings to Columbus.

ON THE FIELD

Playing for one of the top high school football programs in the state of Indiana, Werner racked up 65 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and three forced fumbles for the Fighting Irish this season.

He lined up at cornerback and safety early in his career, but settled in at linebacker during his senior year. Werner finished in third place for Indiana's Mr. Football, and was named the top linebacker in the state.

Werner's greatest strength seems to be his instincts in pursuit of the football, which means he'll certainly be in the running to see special teams early in his college career.

IN THE CLASS

Werner becomes the second linebacker to commit to Ohio State in the last 10 days, joining Kennedale, Texas, five-star Baron Browning. He seemingly fills the spot left vacant by the recently departed Antjuan Simmons, who reopened his recruitment last month.

It should be noted four-star athlete Brendon White may also transition from safety to linebacker in college, giving the Buckeyes a well-rounded class at the position.

Werner comes from the same high school program that produced current Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

THE INTANGIBLES

Though his pledge seemed inevitable, many believed Werner would delay his decision until January following former defensive coordinator Luke Fickell's departure for Cincinnati.

The two had formed a great relationship early in the process and rekindled that flame in the last month, with Fickell's in-home last week being the proverbial straw that broke his commitment from Notre Dame.

Even without his lead recruiter on staff, Werner felt comfortable enough to make the call during his official visit this weekend.
