Ohio State’s men’s sports were the best in the country in 2024-25.

Ohio State was named Wednesday as the men’s winner of this year’s CapitalOne Cup, which honors the best men’s and women’s sports programs in the country.

The Buckeyes won the award based on their top-10 national finishes in seven men’s sports, led by the national championship-winning football team. Other Ohio State teams that contributed to the Buckeyes’ winning total were as follows:

  • Soccer: Third in final United Soccer Coaches poll
  • Fencing: Fourth at NCAA Championships
  • Wrestling: Tied for fifth at NCAA Championships
  • Tennis: Sixth in ITA rankings
  • Gymnastics: Seventh in final NCAA standings
  • Lacrosse: Ninth in postseason Coaches poll

Those seven teams combined to score 113.5 points in the CapitalOne Cup standings – 31.5 more than second-place Penn State, whose teams combined for 82 points.

CapitalOne will award Ohio State $250,000 to fund athlete scholarships as a prize for its win.

"I want to thank Capital One for its stewardship of this important program that ultimately honors student-athletes, coaches and the support staffs who take great pride in what they do," Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. "We had a highly successful and memorable year on the field in 2024-25, a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence that our student-athletes display. I continue to be inspired on a daily basis by the people who uphold and enhance Ohio State's long-standing tradition of excellence in everything that we do."

It’s the second time Ohio State’s men’s sports teams have won the CapitalOne Cup, as the Buckeyes previously won the men’s award in 2016-17.

Ohio State’s women’s teams finished 34th in the women’s CapitalOne Cup standings. North Carolina, which won national championships in lacrosse and soccer, won the women’s CapitalOne Cup with 140 points.
