With a few weeks left, ESPN updated their rankings of the coaches and their recruiting power rankings. I know many on here won't put any stock into anything they say over at that dreaded website, but I digress..
It's an insider story (paywall), so I won't post the link, but I think I can summarize what is relevant to Ohio State (let me know if I am posting/saying too much, staff/MODs).
Two Buckeye assistants checked in on their rankings (they did top 15), and it was Zach Smith at #5 and Kerry Coombs at #13.
On Smith:
"Michigan tried to use his youth against him in recruiting, and that backfired against them. Yes, he is a very good young, up-and-coming recruiter that is killing it in Florida, but he's also a talented coach. You have to do both if you want to be on Urban Meyer's staff." -- an ACC assistant coach
On Coombs:
"He has an endless supply of energy, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. His love for Ohio State is something that shows through in everything he does, and recruits and their families can sense that. He had a great reputation as a high school coach and people wondered if he can recruit, but I'm telling you, he's one of the best recruiters in the country. Period." -- an AAC head coach
I think it's a team effort from our coaches, but these two are certainly doing their part. For instance, the article credits Smith for landing Nick Bosa (he recruits South Florida), but we all know that Larry Johnson was probably the biggest factor in landing Nick.
