I just heard an online show talking about last week's game and he mentioned that Ohio State hasn't made a 50 yard field goal since 2019. The way kickers are booming kicks these days that was kind of shocking to me to hear. I knew we weren't doing particularly well kicking FGs, but still that stat surprised me.
So we missed one again this week. It didn't matter in the final outcome, but at the time 3 points would have meant a lot. There will likely come a time when we play a team with equal or near equal talent where the game might come down to FGs. How important could it be ultimately? That easy to answer, and the answer makes me both mad and sad every time I remember it. We lost a National Championship on 50 yard FG!
I'm not blaming the kicker. But I am wondering why we can get high level guys at every playing position, but for a lot of years now our kickers have been just average. My question to you all is why can't we get a world class kicker on this team? Is that just one more aspect of special teams play that we seem not to be very good at?
