If there is one hole you can find in Ohio State’s defense this year, it’s the ability of the front 4 to rush the passer and get home. A lot of the pressures we saw versus Texas were a product of sim-pressures and bringing backers and DB’s into the mix but on the stat sheet, I’m sure most fans are clamoring for more success from the likes of Caden Curry, Beau Atkinson and Kenyatta Jackson.
This week, the starting QB Navarro, will add a true running threat. OU will certainly call some plus-1 runs for Navarro but I believe he’s the most dangerous when he goes straight drop back, comes off a progression and pulls it down. In order to have success against a running QB in drop back situations, we can’t get up the field and out of rush lanes. So as you are watching the game, don’t pull your hair out if you see the defensive line “mush” the rush in not-so-obvious passing situations. On 2nd/3rd and long, I believe you will continue to see some exotic looks and pressures but don’t expect the front four when we get basic in our alignment to really try to bend the corner against Navarro. I would suggest we call a leveled rush and force him to step up into the pocket and make throws to beat us.
Can’t wait to see how it plays out! Go Bucks!
