I got curious about punting stats after the game. A lot of comments in forums/comments about how bad our punting was against Tx and watching the game I honestly didn't really notice nor thought that Joe's punting affected the game result one way or the other.

I looked up the play by play to get the actual punting stats, here are his 6 punts in sequence:

50y from 25yd line
30y from 23yd line
43y from 31yd line
42y from 8yd line
40y from 20yd line
55y from 30yd line

...for an average of 43.3y. For comparison his season average last year ended up being 42.1y.

Google says FCS punting average is 45y per punt and FBS average is 48y per punt.

So, by that metric we are not getting punting that even meets the D1 average.

Of course, other metrics matter; inside the 20y, hang time, ave return yards etc.

Bottom line, my little research project was enlightening to me, our punter can definitely boom 50+ yarders... but not with any consistency, and his average has to be considered too low. Best that can be said is that he reliably gets the kick off and hasn't really cost us in a actual game... knock on wood.
