Apologies if already posted, as I know this is a popular data point. 5 consecutive games against top-7 opponents is pretty ridiculous, and winning all 5 is even more ridiculous. But it got me thinking if there was any comparable stretch in CFB history, and here are the best I can find. If I'm missing any, please let me know. Regardless, I can't think of a more dramatic turnaround after that Michigan loss in November 2024. The term "historic" gets overused, but in this case this run is absolutely historic. Not just for OSU, but the sport. Anyway:
- 2019 LSU: Blowout wins over #4 UGA, #4 Oklahoma, and #3 Clemson to close out the year. Probably the most lopsided series of wins over top-5 teams.
- 1995 Nebraska: They had a 6 game stretch with annihilating wins over #8 K-State, #7 Colorado, #10 Kansas, and #2 Florida, but had games against unranked Iowa State and Oklahoma interspersed.
- Several teams had brutal stretches but didn't fare well in those stretches. Bottom feeder SEC West teams like Arkansas or Miss State, had gauntlet schedules. Purdue last year had a stretch including ND, Illinois, Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, and Indiana.
- Texas A&M had @ #1 Clemson, #1 Alabama, @ #2 LSU, @ #4 Georgia, and #8 Auburn. But not consecutively, and they lost them all.
