Was looking at some recent history for an idea of where I think our offense and defense will ultimately land this season as compared to the teams of recent years. Last season we put up 35.7 points per game (14th in the nation) and only gave up 12.9 (1st). We averaged 429 yards per game and gave up only 254, a difference of 175 yards per game.
Ryan Day's best statistical offense was 2021, in which we put up 45.7 ppg (best in the country) and averaged a whopping 561 yards per game. However, that season we surrendered almost 23 points and 374 yards per game
Probably the most well rounded team was 2019, a year in which we scored 47 ppg along with 530 yards per game. Defense only allowed 13.7 points and 260 yards per game. Average scoring difference of 33 points and 270 yards per game. What I found interesting though is that the 2024 and 2019 team were almost identical in yards per play (6.9 ypp in 2024, 7.0 ypp in 2019). Defense as well (4.2 ypp in 2024, 4.1 ypp in 2019). We played at a much slower tempo in 2024 with Day looking forward to a long playoff run to try and keep a veteran team healthy.
This season, I expect that we play at a faster temp with a younger roster to get more experience/reps than what we saw last year. I expect that we can keep our yards per play around 7 and put up close to 475 yards and 40 points per game while I expect the defense to take a step back but still hold teams to somewhere in the range of 275 yards per game and around 16-17ppg. If we play to this level we should have an incredible season and be one of, if not the best teams in the country.
