After reading today’s article on Emeka Egbuka, by Dan Hope, I was struck by the depth of meaning the National Championship meant to Emeka.  “Most of all, though, Egbuka feels grateful that he had the opportunity to be a Buckeye and that they were able to win a national championship together. And he credited his faith with allowing that all to happen.”

There are are probably many takes on what a championship actually is.  Words after all, evolve over time.  To dumb championship down into its most basic meaning we could probably all agree that it’s become to be ‘winning the big enchilada.’

But because Emeka credits his faith for allowing this championship to happen, perhaps a faith rendition of what a is champion would be appreciated.  In old times armies would face one another.  To avert massive carnage armies would send a chosen warrior to fight as representatives; to stand in the gap for their fellow countrymen.  These warriors would fight in “spaces” between the armies until one prevailed.  The prevailing warrior was the champion.  Now in the faith that Emeka espouses, things that happened in the old were considered pictures or shadows of what was to come.

Outside of faith, and in this world of carnal existence, we can still extrapolate meaning from the faith rendered definition of champion.  Two fan bases (what we call nations today) put rooting interests in representative warriors that take the field carrying their particular banner.  They fight in spaces, “defending every inch” until a victor emerges.  A champion.  This time, our champions.

Thanks to all our warriors for carrying Buckeye nation to the apex.
