I am using Day here where some may argue Chip Kelly is to blame, but it rolls up to Day. It was evident from the jump that Day was never going to win this game. And never will, given another shot. The greatest sports psychologist the world has ever seen cannot fix the Mental Game that Day has boxed himself into. He's in an unbelievable state of fear and stubbornness. He simply refused to use his team's strengths on offense in an attempt to wrestle inner demons and settle old scores. His attempt to resolve a vendetta of years past was coaching malpractice.
Have you ever seen a team voluntarily put their greatest strength on ice, and try to use a weakness to beat the opponent's clear strength? Nope. Even the color commentator wouldn't shut up about how foolish it was.
Have you ever seen a scared team beat a confident one? Me neither.
It was said that Day shouldn't try to win previous games this week, lest he lose them again. Day wanted to prove that they could run the ball, especially up the middle, even more than he wanted to win. And the result was the same; Harbaugh beat him AGAIN.
The outcome made me think of a quote from Tin Cup, where the hero golfer tries to defend acting like an idiot and beating himself... his coach says, "You'd bury yourself alive just to prove you could handle a shovel."
Moore and the defense knew the hill that Day was willing to die on... and he just did. I was a huge Day supporter until today, but given he would rather die on a hill trying to win last year than win today, he and his shovel can hit the road.
