I must apologize once again for not completing this last week. I have been unusually busy with work. I guess the good news is that I don’t think the Indiana game is as revealing as a game like this against Maryland. Going into Michigan, I think we know a lot more about what we can expect from this team going forward.

The big story from this game is the tale of two halves with the running game, though even that is overshadowed by the game this Saturday. Everything else we saw on Saturday with the offense has been known for a while, and this game didn’t tell us a lot that was new. However, how the running game changed in this game is extremely encouraging for the rest of the season.

Here is the play-by-play:

Offensive Play-by-Play vs. Maryland
Time Yard Line Down Distance O Formation D Package Front High Type Box Play Player Yards Notes
First Quarter
15:00 O25 1 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 Streak Harrison 29 Stroud (+3) throws a perfect ball, and Harrison (+3) makes a one-handed spectacular catch while interferred with. This is what t it looks like when two NFL guys are playing future accountants.
14:46 M46 1 10 Ace Pair Z-In 3x1 4-3 Under 1 Run 8 Inside Zone Henderson 2 Egbuka (-1) gets beat, and Henderson gets hit early. Johnson (+1) and Stover had a nice block combo though. Play-calling +0.5 for running with numbers.
14:26 M44 2 8 Gun Twin TE Pair 3x1 4-3 Under 1 Pass 8 Mesh Harrison 6 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Harrison, who makes a routine catch.
14:07 M38 3 1 Gun 3x1 4-2-5 Under 2 Run 6 Inside Zone Henderson 7 Stover (+1) and Matt Jones (+0.5) create a lane for Henderson, who gets the first down. Play-calling +0.5 for equating numbers.
13:42 M31 1 10 Gun 11 Empty 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 Spot Fleming 0 Stroud throws a good pass to Fleming (-0.5) who can't make the difficult grab. I don't think this is a bad read from Stroud, you expect Fleming to be able to make this catch. Still, the coverage was quite good. Play-calling -0.5 for going to the zone-beater against man-coverage. Henderson was open on the other side, but I don't mind the throw.
13:38 M31 2 10 Gun Twin TE 3x1 3-4 Tite 2 Pass 8 PA Rollout Throwback HB Screen Henderson 31 Play-calling +2 to get Maryland caught on a blitz. Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Henderson (+1), who breaks a tackle following good blocks from Stover (+1) and Scott (+1). Pretty play. Touchdown.
8:47 O25 1 10 Gun Y Flex HX Stack 4-2-5 Under 2 Penalty 5.5 Delay of Game Stroud -5 Stroud (-1), though I don't think Day noticed either. Usually he takes a timeout there. Weird for them not to have a play ready out of the huddle.
8:47 O25 1 15 Gun Y Flex HX Stack 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Inside Zone Henderson -1 Matthew Jones (+1) gets a good seal to the inside. Play-calling +1 for breaking tendencies in a formation they never run out of. Henderson (-3) misses a small hole following Wypler and a big hole to the left of Jackson. Woof.
8:24 O19 2 16 ABC ABC ABC ABC Penalty   False Start Stroud -5 Not all players are set, which is on Stroud (-1).
8:09 O14 2 21 Gun 4-3 Over 2 Pass 7 Divide Egbuka 0 This looked like a dime on the TV. Stroud (+3) throws a perfect pass and Egbuka (-1) can't make the difficult catch. Wypler (-1) also gets beat up the middle, which forces Stroud to throw early. Stroud makes a great throw with lots of pressure, though it was nearly picked. Pretty bold. Loved it though. Pressure -1.
8:03 O14 3 21 Gun 3x1 3-3-5 Tite 2 Pass 6.5 Deep Out Fleming 0 Stroud (+2) makes a perfect throw, but Fleming cannot make the spectacular catch. I think he could have done better by coming a little more back to the LOS, but this is nice coverage and a perfect throw. On 3rd and 21, this is fine. Punt.
3:48 O15 1 10 Gun Twin TE 3-4 Tite 1 Read Option 7.5 GT Counter Read Henderson -5 Stroud (+1, -2) makes the correct read, but Henderson (-2) holds on to the ball too long. Probably would have been a good game, so Play-calling +1.
3:15 O10 2 15 Gun Y Flex Trips 4-2-5 Under 2 Penalty 6 False Start Stover -5 Stover (-1)
3:11 O5 2 20 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Under 1 Run 6 Split Zone Henderson 5 No grade here. Just fine. Had numbers, but running here isn't ideal.
2:39 O10 3 15 Gun Y Flex Trips 3-2-6 Wide 4 Pass 5 Scramble Stroud 5 I don't mind Stroud scrambling out of the pocket to see if someone flashes late and to give himself more time. Just a modified version of a throw away. Punt.
Second Quarter
15:00 O10 1 10 Pistol 3W Y Flex Mtn In 3-3-5 Tite 2 Run 6 Mid Zone Henderson -1 Johnson (+0.5) and Stover (+0.5) have a good combo block on the edge. Henderson (-1) needs to keep pushing this to the edge, especially with Stover having decent leverage on the linebacker. While I think some plays aren't affected by his health, I think this one is. Play-calling should be good running into a light box, but I can't give it any credit as Henderson is hurt.
14:29 O10 2 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 Streak Harrison 0 Stroud throws an okay pass, but Harrison can't come down with the spectacular grab. So close.
14:16 O10 3 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 5 Drag Fleming 25 Stroud throws a good pass to Fleming (+2), who makes a routine catch before getting some excellent YAC. He looks pretty good when he has space. Play-calling +1, as he was wide open. Protection +1 with Wypler (+1) and Jackson (+1) picking up a stunt well.
14:13 O35 1 10 Gun 3x1 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6.5 Inside Zone Henderson 4 Egbuka (-1) lets a defensive back in the backfield. Henderson (+1.5) does a nice job to get around the defender and pick up a decent gain.
13:36 O39 2 6 Gun Twin Te Pair Wing F 3x1 4-3 Over 1 Pass 8 Spacing Egbuka 13 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Egbuka (+1.5), who makes a routine catch before getting a couple other.
12:42 M48 1 10 Ace Pair 3x1 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 7 PA Checkdown Henderson 0 Stroud has all day here due to Johnson (+1) and Dawand Jones (+1). Protection +2. Stroud throws a good pass to Henderson, who can't make the difficult catch. Wouldn't have mattered either way. Maryland with good coverage here.
12:35 M48 2 10 Pistol  4-2-5 Boundary 1 Run 7 Inside Zone Henderson 4 Stover (+0.5) clears the right side to get Henderson (+0.5) one-on-one with a linebacker, which gets him points.
12:27 M44 3 6 Gun 11 Empty 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 5 Spacing Egbuka 6 Stroud (+0.5) throws a good pass to Egbuka (+1), who makes a routine catch. Play-calling +0.5 to run spacing with Maryland in zone.
11:44 M38 1 10 Pistol 3W 3x1 Z Mtn 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6.5 PA Rollout Harrison 0 Stroud (+1, -1) does a pretty good job of getting outside and throws a good jump ball to Harrison, who can't come up with a spectacular catch. This is an aggressive play/borderline reckless play, but I don't mind giving Harrison 50/50 balls. Anybody else? No. Harrison? Sure.
11:19 M38 2 10 Gun Twin TE F Flex 4-2-5 Boundary 1 RPO 8 RPO Screen Harrison 24 Great read by Stroud (+1), which gives Rossi (+0.5) and Egbuka (+0.5) a chance to lead the way for Harrison, who makes a routine catch. Personal foul on Maryland.
11:12 M14 1 10 Pistol 3W Y Flex Trips Y Mtn 4-2-5 Over 3 Run 6 Outside Zone Henderson -1 Matt Jones (-1) and Jackson (-1) climb up to the second level too quickly, so Henderson (-0.5) is hit in the backfield. He tries to spin out of contact instead of falling forward. Play-calling +1.5 as Ohio State had 6 blockers for 5 defenders. If the two guards stay on their doubles longer, this is n easy gain.
10:17 M15 2 11 Gun 3x1 3-3-5 5-1 Tite 2 Pass 6 Throw Away Stroud 0 Protection +2.  Dawand Jones (+1.5) and Johnson (+1.5) are in no danger of giving up anything. Stroud (-2) bails a little early and throws the ball away. In total fairness, his internal clock was absolutely going off.  Still think he could step up/scramble instead.
10:10 M15 3 11 Gun Y Flex Trips 3-3-5 Base 2 Pass 6 Comeback Harrison 0 Stroud (-1) throws an inaccurate pass to Harrison, and the ball is uncatchable. Still, this is awfully close. Stroud wasn't off by much. Field Goal.
3:47 O26 1 10 ABC ABC ABC 1 Run 6.5 Inside Zone Henderson 5 Jackson (+2) effectively blocks two players. Can't see much besides this.
3:27 O31 2 5 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Inside Zone Henderson -1 Stover (+0.5), Jackson (+1), Johnson (+1), as well as others clear two separate holes, both of which are missed by Henderson (-3). Don't know how this run could have been much worse. Needs to wait a second. Chase Brown/Blake Corum are so good at this.
3:07 O30 3 6 Gun Y Flex 3-3-5 Base 2 Pass 6 Shallow Cross Egbuka 7 Stroud (+2) throws a perfect pass to Egbuka (+0.5) while falling backward, and Egbuka makes a routine catch.
2:20 O37 1 10 Gun 3x1 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Inside Zone Hayden 3 Matt Jones (+1), Jackson (+1) and Wypler (+0.5) create a big hole for Hayden (-2), who isn't patient enough to take advantage.Play-calling +0.5 for running with numbers.
2:14 O40 2 7 Gun 11 Empty 3-3-5 Tite 2 Pass 6 Spot Fleming 5 Stroud throws a good throw to Fleming (+1), who makes a difficult catch.
1:35 O45 3 2 Gun 11Empty 3-3-5 Tite 0 Pass 7 Slants Egbuka 0 Six-man pressure. Stroud (-1) makes a good throw, but Egbuka (-1) can't make the difficult catch. Looks like he got dinosaur arms. Stover was the better option with a safety playing off. Stroud should be able to read that based on the pre-snap look. Punt.
Third Quarter
12:37 M14 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 3 Run 6 Split Zone Hayden 6 Jackson (+0.5) and Johnson (+0.5) work together to get a crease for Hayden (+0.5), who reads it well to get good yardage.
12:18 M8 2 4 Pistol 3W 3-3-5 Over 1 Run 6.5 Mid Zone Hayden 8 Wypler (+1), Johnson (+1), and Stover (+0.5) provide a path for Hayden (+1), who makes it look easy for the touchdown.
10:56 O36 1 10 Pistol 3W 3x1 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 PA Curl Harrison 7 Stroud throws an okay pass, and Harrison (+1) makes a difficult catch.
10:32 O43 2 3 ABC ABC ABC ABC Run ABC ABC Hayden 8 Dawand Jones (+0.5) and Stover (+0.5) with good blocks, with Hayden (+0.5) following them.
10:22 M49 1 10 Pistol 3W 3-3-5 Tite 2 Pass 6 PA Streak Harrison 0 Stroud throws the ball inaccurately to Harrison, and the ball is uncatchable. Corner is in phase; this would have been a tough throw.
10:14 M49 2 10 ABC ABC ABC 4 Pass 6 Checkdown Hayden 0 Stroud (-1) makes an okay throw, and Hayden gets the routine catch. If the throw is a little better, Hayden gets a couple yards. Not an overly difficult throw.
9:38 M49 3 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 Smash Egbuka 35 Stroud (+3) makes a perfect throw to Egbuka (+2), who makes a difficult catch. Play-calling +1, as Fleming was open on the other side as well. Really liked this play all around.
9:17 M14 1 10 Pistol 3W 4-3 Over 1 Run 7 Split Zone Hayden 0 Matt Jones (-1) comes off the double-team too quickly. Hayden (-1) would have gotten at least five yards if he just waits another moment as Jackson (+1) is able to seal his defender inside.
8:44 M14 2 10 Ace 3W H Mtn In 3-3-5 Tite 1 Run 7 End Around Egbuka 0 I love this play-design; it gives them another way to approach attacking the defense with the receiver on the line. Egbuka is one-on-one with a defensive-back, but can't make him miss. Didn't work this time, but I like that they have it in the bag as a counter to outside zone/split zone/windback. Backside safety stays put though, so it doesn't work out. Play-calling -0.5.
8:37 M13 3 9 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 0 Pass 8 Throw Away Stroud -16 Six-man pressure. Stroud (-2) needs to get this ball out quickly. If he identifies where the pressure is, Stover is open. Would it be a first down? Maybe not, but it would give a fourth and short.
5:24 O12 1 10 Pistol 4-3 Boundary 1 Run 8 Split Zone Hayden 5 Jackson (+1.5) gets a great push, and Hayden just follows him up the middle. Play-calling -0.5 for numbers advantage.
4:50 O17 2 5 Gun Twin TE Pair 3x1 4-3 Under 1 Run 8 Inside Zone Hayden 4 Wypler (+0.5), Jackson (+0.5), and Matt Jones (+0.5) all get decent push. Play-calling -0.5 for numbers disadvantage.
4:24 O21 3 1 Gun Y Flex Trips 4-2-5 Under 2 Run 6 Inside Zone Hayden 17 Dawand Jones (+0.5) and Matt Jones (+1) give Hayden (+1.5) enough room to get the first down untouched. Even though Ohio State didn't have numbers, they did break a tendency, so I don't mind the play-call.
3:51 O38 1 10 Gun Twin TE 4-3 Boundary 2 Run 7 Counter Trey Hayden 9 Backside edge dives inside, as he is fooled by the offensive line action. Play-calling +1. Rossi (+0.5) has a good block. Hayden (+0.5) gets behind Stover to get a bit extra.
3:37 O47 2 1 Gun Y Flex Trips 4-2-5 Under 2 Run 6 Wide Zone Hayden 0 Blocking is just okay here. Hayden (-1) needs to let blocking develop or bounce this outside. Most of the time bouncing it outside is less than ideal, but there was very little there.
2:46 O47 3 1 Ace Pair Wing F 3-4 Tite 1 Run 9 Zone Insert Hayden 4  and Matt Jones (+1) get Hayden some space for the first down.
2:31 M49 1 10 Ace Pair Z-In 3x1 3-4 Tite 2 Run 7 Inside Zone Hayden 1 Rossi (-1) can't hold his block here. Shame because there was a lane here.
1:50 M48 2 9 Gun Twin TE Pair 3x1 3-4 Tite 2 Pass 7 Mesh Harrison 17 Stroud (+0.5) throws a good pass to Harrison (+2) who shapes his route flawlessly to get big yardage after a routine catch. Play-calling +0.5 for catching Maryland in man on Harrison.
1:32 M31 1 10 Gun Twin TE 3-4 Tite 1 Run 8 Counter Trey Hayden 2 Rossi (-1) gets caught behind Jackson (+0.5). I think if he blocks the corner, Hayden has a clear path toward that side. Oh well. Dawand Jones (+0.5) got decent push as well.
0:56 M29 2 8 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 PA Curl Fleming 0 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass, and Fleming can't come down with it, though he was interferred with.
0:50 M17 1 10 Gun Twin TE 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 8 PA Y Cross Stover 14 Stroud (+2) makes a perfect throw, and Stover (+1) makes a routine catch. Play-calling +1, as the constant runs forced Maryland to load the box and rely on man-coverage.
0:22 M3 1 3 I-Formation Strong Z-In Goal Line Goal Line 0 Run 10 Zone Insert Hayden 3 Dawand Jones (+1) with a great combo block with Matt Jones (+1). Stover (+1) also seals it off for Hayden (+0.5). Touchdown.
Fourth Quarter
13:45 O47 1 10 Gun Twin TE Pair FB 3x1 4-3 Under 2 Pass 7 Scramble Stroud 6 Stroud (+1) takes the easy yardage on the scramble. Protection +2. All linemen get +0.5.
13:12 M47 2 4 Pistol Y Flex Jet Y 3-4 Tite 2 Run 7 Split Zone Hayden 21 Dawand Jones (+0.5) and Stover (+0.5) have good blocks, and Hayden (+1) slows up to find the right hole. Nice run. Also got a facemask
13:04 M26 1 10 Gun H Tight 3x1 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 7 Dig Egbuka 13 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass, and Egbuka (+2) makes a difficult catch. Tough play all around. Maryland looks sharp.
12:41 M13 1 10 Pistol 3W ABC ABC 1 Run 8 Outside Zone Hayden 13 This was a hurry-up so they didn't review the Egbuka catch. Wypler (+0.5), Stover (+0.5), and Johnson (+0.5) all seal defenders to the inside. Hayden (+2) breaks two tackles to get into the endzone for a touchdown. Play-calling +1 to snap the ball quickly. Impressive while being vastly outnumbered.
9:49 O25 1 10 Pistol Y Flex Jet Y 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 7 Split Zone Hayden 5 Matt Jones (+0.5) has a solid block and Hayden (+0.5) cuts back to hit the huge hole.
9:39 O30 2 5 Gun 12 Empty 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 7 Checkdown Hayden 11 Stroud (+1) makes a great decision and throws a good pass to Hayden (+1), who makes a routine catch. Before getting a first down.
9:07 O41 1 10 Gun Y Flex 3x1 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Arc Read Stroud -1 Stroud makes the correct read, but the safety makes a nice tackle.
8:26 O40 2 11 ABC ABC ABC ABC Pass ABC Drag Egbuka 9 Stroud (+1) throws a perfect pass, and Egbuka (+0.5) makes a routine catch. Defensive holding, though it shouldn't have been called. Contact like that is perfectly legal within 5-yards of LOS.
8:18 O49 1 10 Gun Twin TE Pair 3x1 3-4 Tite 2 Pass 7 Comeback Harrison 0 Stroud throws an okay pass, and the ball is uncatchable.  Put in the only place where only Harrison could get it, but even that was a stretch. I don't mind the miss here.
8:05 O49 2 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Run 7 Inside Zone Hayden 3 Kind of fine. Everyone was decent.
7:43 M48 3 7 Gun Y Flex FB 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 6 Improvisation Stover 6 Johnson (+1) and Dawand Jones (+0.5) give Stroud (+2) some good protection. Protection +1.5. Stroud throws a questionable, but good throw to Stover (+2), who wins a 50/50 ball for what should have been a first down. The spot was not particularly generous.
6:45 M42 4 1 Gun Twin TE Pair 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 7 Improvisation Harrison 0 Stover (-1) might have allowed pressure a little early, but it wasn't bad. Protection -1. Stroud (+0.5) rolls out and throws an okay ball to Harrison, who can't make the spectacular catch. Wouldn't have minded seeing a run here; the numbers are equated.
5:54 O12 1 10 Pistol  3-4 Tite 1 Run 7.5 Outside Zone Hayden 11 Dawand Jones (+2) and Stover (+0.5) create a big hole for Hayden (+0.5) who is able to fall forward..
5:32 O23 1 10 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Tight Zone Hayden 5 Jackson (+.5) gets a good block, with Hayden (+0.5) falling forward after getting hit early.
5:08 O28 2 5 Pistol 3-4 Tite 2 Run 7 Split Zone Hayden 2 Matt Jones (+1) seals a hole for Hayden (-1), but Hayden misses it and cuts back instead.
4:37 O30 3 2 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 1 Penalty 7 Offsides N/A 5 N/A
3:57 O36 1 10 Pistol  3-4 Tite 2 Run 7 Mid Zone Hayden 18 Matt Jones (+1) and Dawand Jones (+1) both have strong blocks which Hayden (+1.5) bursts through.
3:36 M46 1 10 Gun Y Flex Trips 3-3-5 Tite 2 Run 6 Tight Zone Hayden 3 Stalemate across the board.
3:18 M43 2 7 I-Formation Strong Z-In 4-3 Over 1 Run 9 Iso Hayden 1 Rossi (-1) doesn't get a great block, but Play-calling -0.5 as there is an unblocked defender. Matt Jones injured.
3:11 M42 3 6 Gun 12 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 9 Spacing Egbuka 8 Stroud makes an okay throw, and Egbuka (+2) makes a difficult catch. Huge time for this catch.
3:00 M34 1 10 Pistol 4-3 Field 0 Run 8 Outside Zone Hayden 2 Hayden (+1) does a great job to avoid the first unblocked defender, but Maryland is selling out. Play-calling -1.
2:55 M32 2 8 Gun Twin TE 3-4 Tite 0 Run 10 Inside Zone Hayden 1 Can't get much space here.
1:31 M33 3 7 Ace Pair Wing F Tight 3x1 3-4 Tite 2 Run 11 Off-Tackle Hayden 4 Dawand Jones (+1) gives Hayden (+0.5) a little space. Only  three points, but this drive knocked six minutes off the clock. Field Goal.
End of Charting

After that, I feel both much worse and much better about this offense. I feel much worse because I thought Ryan Day called a pretty good game, and it never felt like this team was just working on certain things like they did at times in the past couple of months. Everything that they called made sense in the context of the game, and the offense still didn’t look super crisp. That is not a great feeling to have going into the Michigan game.

However, I feel much better about the offense after this game because this game reinforces every other game this year; when the defense tries to take away one part of the offense, it opens up the other part of the offense. Because although the running game struggled in the first half, as soon as Ohio State switched to Hayden, the offense exploded. Look at some of these grades for the offensive line:

Offensive Grades vs. Maryland
Player + - Total Percentage Notes
Offensive Line
Donovan Jackson 10 1 9 90.9 Super encouraging to see him have this game right before Michigan. Excellent.
Luke Wypler 4 1 3 80.0 Really solid, but not spectacular.
paris johnson jr. 8.5 0 8.5 100.0 A first rounder for a reason.
dawand jones 10.5 0 10.5 100.0 Can't believe how much better he is this year than last year.
Matthew Jones 9 2 7 81.8 Would be a big miss if he can't play.
total 42 4 38 91.3 One of the best games I have seen from them. Totally different unit from last year.
Backs
cj stroud 29.5 12 17.5 71.1 Some incredible throws. He is close on a ton of others; this game looks a lot different with those completed.
treveyon henderson 3 9.5 -6.5 24.0 This was a "worst-of" game for him. Worst of his bad habits last year combined with his health issues this year. I am fairly optimistic about him next year, but he has some work to do.
Dallan hayden 13 5 8 72.2 Honestly started pretty slowly and missed a couple big holes. Caught his stride after a series or two and was great after. Performance was optimistic on multiple fronts.
total 45.5 26.5 19 63.2 Hayden's mistakes in this game should excite the fan base for next week. If Williams would have played in this game and had an average game, he would have gone for 7 YPC with the way the line was blocking. Also, Hayden is a genuinely good back.
Receivers
julian fleming 3 0.5 2.5 85.7 Didn't block much and wasn't targeted much. Perfectly acceptable for your third receiver.
emeka egbuka 10 4 6 71.4 He is so close to being a first-round level receiver. Just so inconsistent every week. Even in this game, if he makes a few more plays early/blocks better, Ohio State moves the ball better in the first half.
marvin harrison jr. 6 0 6 100.0 So close to making a few spectacular plays. Maryland prioritized covering him.
cade stover 10 2 8 83.3 Somehow he is still underrated by most people
mitch rossi 1 3 -2 25.0 Probably his worst game of the year, but he has been excellent.
gee scott jr. 1 0 1 100.0 Love how he is developing. He plays really hard and looks like he could be special at tight end.
total 31 9.5 21.5 76.5 The wide receivers haven't been as great as expected, but Cade Stover has helped this offense a ton.
metrics
protection 8.5 1 7.5   This offensive line is so much better than last year's group.
play calling 11.5 5 6.5   Well-called game. I don't have any gripes here.

That offensive line performance is better than I have seen this entire season regardless of competition. I know Ohio State played Maryland and they don’t exactly have a great front, but that was a beatdown.

The running back situation was one of the big reasons that Ohio State didn’t dominate further on the ground. Henderson had a “worst-of” game, where he brought back some of his worst habits from last year along with his bad health this year to produce that game. I would like to stress that I actually like most of his performance better this year than last year. While I don’t think he is singularly the reason that Ohio State struggled running against Michigan last year, I think he was a huge culprit. Michigan couldn’t stop the run against any team with a pulse in 2021. Last year, Henderson would constantly pick the worst possible path to go, as compared to this year, where he usually avoids that, but he still misses good cutback lanes. This game was just frustrating because his usual performance this season would have been fine. He didn’t need last year’s explosiveness or unusual vision. I don’t think his performance would have been as good as Hayden’s, but he could have averaged like 4 YPC instead of 1.8 YPC. Most of his issues were not related to his health, though he did have a couple of plays where it looked like he could have made them had he been healthier. It just wasn’t his night.

While I don’t think Henderson is nearly as bad as this performance was, I do think Dallan Hayden showed that he can more than carry the load while Henderson recovers. If you’ve read these all season you might notice that for as many carries as Hayden got, his score is a little low. When I watched the game live, it felt like he was basically perfect. As I rewatched it, my opinion changed a little bit. He hit the holes as they opened up, but he missed a couple of others from rushing into the line rather than waiting for the blocks to develop. Watching Chase Brown and Blake Corum this weekend showed how some of these runs could be executed. Still, it was mostly a very good game for Hayden, as he seems to be easily the best running back on the roster for Ohio State’s favorite run play: outside zone. He has the vision to find cutback lanes with outside zone, but the speed to get to the outside if it is there. Williams and Henderson have one of those qualities each, but neither of them have both. I imagine that Hayden will have increased playing time moving forward, as Sermon did in 2020 after he had success with that play against Michigan State. I do think that if Williams is healthy enough to play, he should get plenty of carries, though. I think Williams would have had a huge day against Maryland.

The bigger reason for optimism is the offensive line after that performance. I thought they were nearly perfect, both in run blocking and pass protection. The few pressures were from rare, but well-timed blitzes or from Stroud exiting the pocket early. The holes in the run game were plenty. I think it would be hard for them to play much better next week. If Matt Jones can’t go next week, there might be some cause for concern. Michigan is certainly a different beast than Maryland. Also, I would be surprised if Michigan uses the same strategy from last year and the same one that Maryland used in this game; force Ohio State to run with a light box in order to devote more resources to the passing game.

Because even though the running game was the best part of Ohio State’s offense on Saturday, their passing attack is still the more lethal half of their offense. Here are the relevant passing charts:

This passing offense felt like it barely missed a few plays throughout the game. The long third down throw to Fleming, a couple of different throws to Egbuka that were either broken up or dropped, a couple of throws to Harrison that were nearly caught, a couple of throws to Harrison that were just barely overthrown, etc. I am not overly concerned about the passing offense performing, though I want to see it click eventually. This still feels like it could be a special unit.

I know this is about the most lukewarm take that I could have, but I do think that the offense loses a lot without JSN. I know there are some that are concerned about upsetting chemistry within the offense, but I think they need to take the chance. Right now, Ohio State has one guy in Harrison that they are quite dependent on. Egbuka is another solid option, but he isn’t a dominant receiver yet. Fleming is fine as a #3, but he isn’t doing much more than that yet. JSN replacing Fleming is a pretty significant increase in production, and it would allow Ohio State to use more of the playbook that they were planning to use prior to the season. The offense they have without JSN is certainly quite good, but it won’t reach an elite level without him.

What should we be worried about for Michigan?

Honestly, I came out of this a little more concerned about the offense as a whole than I was before this game. For at least a few of the games in the middle of the year, it felt like there was a self-imposed limitation on the offense. Instead of operating at maximum capacity, they were using games as live scrimmage. In this one, I thought Ryan Day called a good game and the offense still didn’t look dominant against a poor Maryland defense. I still don’t think it was ultimately that bad of a game; Ohio State moved the ball fine in the second half after Hayden came in. Still, this offense has not performed nearly as well as last year’s outfit did at this point in the year. The offense is still the strength of the team, but they are not as good as last year’s version.

If you were to pick one thing from the offense, the passing game has not been as great as expected over the past month.  Fleming has settled into his role of a solid #3 guy, but he is a far cry from Olave last season at Z. Egbuka is not as reliable as JSN was last year at H. Only Marvin Harrison can be compared favorably to Garrett Wilson at X, though I don’t think he is a huge upgrade by any means. Even if Stover is better than Ruckert, they just don’t use the tight end enough for it to matter much. Again, they are still good, but they aren’t good enough to hide the warts from the rest of the team.

What should we not be worried about for Michigan?

Play-calling. I know that at times, the play-calling has seemed overly conservative or vanilla. After this game, I don’t imagine that it will be a concern against Michigan. I am absolutely convinced that they were working on things for most games, as their best-called games this season have coincidentally been against their best opponents.

I also think the offensive line should be up to the task against Michigan. Last year, the unit constantly had games where they struggled against good defensive fronts, like they did against Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, and Oregon. This year, the only negatively graded game for the offensive line was against Northwestern, which feels like a fluke for multiple different reasons. Michigan has a great front, but I don’t foresee the offensive line having anywhere near the difficulty they had last year with the Wolverines.

What should we be excited about for Michigan?

The running game. I don’t know exactly how Michigan will try to attack Ohio State, but if they try to leave a light box like last year, it won’t work. Michigan’s defensive front is excellent, there is no doubt about it. With the offensive line’s improvement and the emergence of Dallan Hayden as the best running back on the team at running outside zone, I feel a lot more confidence in their ability to run the ball in the event of Michigan devoting extra resources to the pass. If even Michigan can’t shut down the Ohio State offense, I don’t know if there is a defense in the country that will be able to.
