This is the question I ask myself when I think about whether CJ Stroud should be Ohio State's starting quarterback. Because I think it should be the expectation that Ohio State's QB is a first round pick. Lincoln Riley's QBs at Oklahoma have been Baker (1st), Kyler (1st), Jalen (2nd but now a starter) and Rattler (probably a 1st), and Ryan Day's QBs have been JT (nothing), Dwayne (1st) and Justin (1st). And as we've seen the last few years in CFB, it pretty much takes a 1st round QB to legitimately contend for the national title. So if Ohio State is going to be a national title contender, they need to have a first round pick-caliber QB. And I realize it's only 2 weeks in, and CJ threw for a ton of yards today. But just watching him (and admittedly I know nothing about QB play), he just seems like a significant step down from Justin or even Dwayne. He either can't or is super unwilling to run. And while there are some nice balls from time to time, the accuracy is certainly not consistent, and that last throw was just brutal. Can't imagine Justin missing that badly ever. Obviously he has several years to improve, but I just don't see a first round talent there right now. Doesn't mean he's not super talented and a very good quarterback. Just not convinced he's first-round talent either. And of course we don't see practice, so maybe McCord isn't a first-round talent either (and Ewers is so new it would be hard to put him out there now). I just worry that he might be closer to Jake Fromm talent than Justin Fields talent, and as Georgia learned, Jake Fromm isn't getting you over the hump.
